Today, I joined virologist and fellow fertility doctor, Dr. Cindy Duke on a panel at Curetalk to talk about the impact of COVID-19 on reproduction and pregnancy. As the COVID 19 pandemic began to affect lives around the world, out of an abundance of caution, the ASRM task force released a mandate on March 17th, 2020 recommending fertility clinics to suspend all new infertility treatments, cancel embryo transfers, and suspend all elective surgeries. Almost a month later, in an update #2 released on April 13, the ASRM states “While it is not yet prudent to resume non-emergency infertility procedures, the Task Force recognizes it is also time to begin to consider strategies and best practices for resuming time-sensitive fertility treatments in the face of COVID-19.”

Today Dr. Cindy Duke and I talked about the rapidly changing recommendations in this field, how the patients are getting affected and the future landscape of infertility treatments. We were joined by Amy Schmidy Zook, Valerie Landis, and Shweta Mishra.

Curetalk is broadcast as a live radio show, on the BlogTalkRadio platform.

Thankyou Dr Cindy M.P. Duke, MD, PhD, FACOG for this explanation on why we need masks AND social distancing!

“They’re saying we can breathe in Coronavirus now?”

Friends, this has ALWAYS been the case, for this family of viruses!

To clarify, the reason for the recommendation of 6 feet or more of distance between folks, is to prevent one from breathing in the virus! That’s always been the rationale and it’s NOT new information! It’s not even botched messaging from scientists. I expect that when this is all over, many will try to spin the botched messaging into blaming scientists and science but please be guided that when you hear people try to do that, it is just meandering!

Looking to cite botched messaging? It was botched by those who didn’t stop to ask/understand why the 6 feet recommendation? A minimum of 6 feet was NEVER just about touching. If it were simply about minimizing touching/contact, the recommendation would have been 2-3 feet (arm’s length) or so.

However, many people have chosen to ignore the MINIMUM 6 feet and others have no choice (e.g. essential workers riding on subways, those on commercial airlines, etc).

While masks will help decrease spread of virus from asymptomatic (& unidentified) carriers who are out there, the need to stay a minimum of 6 feet away from others is still paramount.

My take home point is that wearing a mask does not equal a green light to congregate and social distancing will still be needed for the next 6 months and possibly a whole year or more... until an effective vaccine is found!

The forthcoming recommendation of the mask is also out of hope that industry can return to normal but I won’t delve into that right now. I just wished they wouldn’t make it sound like it’s NEW information or the smoking gun. We needed to be wearing the correct type of mask from day 1 and we STILL need people to understand why a minimum of 6 feet.

Here at The Trinidad and Tobago Centre for Comprehensive Women’s Health we are proud to be a trailblazer in the field of telemedicine and healthcare delivery for almost 4 years!

We thank our lead consultant Dr Cindy M.P. Duke, MD, PhD, FACOG for her continued support and expertise as we strive to revolutionize Women’s Health in Trinidad & Tobago!

As someone who has practiced comprehensive and integrated Telemedicine, both locally and internationally, for almost 4 years, I’d like to share some of my proven key reasons for WHY in Women’s Health:

1. Patients love it!

2. The patient no show/cancelation rate is very low!

3. Everything that you would do in most consultations/return visits can be accomplished in a video visit.

4. Screen share allows you to share results & surgical pics with the patient!

5. It helps you limit in office appointments to procedures & acute visits, while maintaining social distancing in a healthcare context!

6. Reproductive age patients are especially tech savvy and for them, it’s a seamless no brainer.

7. Preoperative counseling/consents signing, postpartum screens, STI counseling, Safety assessments and contraceptive surveillance are easily accomplished in video visits.

8. It’s the perfect physician extender and helps to reduce Physician Burnout by adding flexibility to the physician’s schedule.

9. It offers additional privacy for patients who are concerned/hesitant about coming to the office by removing the “initiating a visit” barrier.. e.g for infertility or fertility preservation patients!
