Dr. Clifford Thomas presented two papers from The Tobago Heart Study and Dr. Rodriguez will be presenting a Case Report this afternoon. Other team members shown are co-authors of the Study and have been key players in supporting our clinical and research work.

On June 24th, AVENTA (Novartis) hosted an insightful evening featuring two team members from Premier Heart Care Ltd: Dr. Clifford Thomas, who shared his expertise on the management of heart failure and Dr. Martina Rodriguez, who explored therapies for preventing and treating cardiovascular disease due to high cholesterol.

Their presentations sparked meaningful dialogue on advancing cardiovascular care in the region.

Congratulations to Dr. Shervelle Fouché, who just began her internship. Years ago, she did a medical school elective under my supervision and afterwards volunteered at our Premier Heart Care Ltd office - observing everything from cardiology consults to ECGs, echos, stress tests and even angiography.

Yesterday, she stopped by just to say “thank you” - and honestly, she made my day!

During a Trans-esophageal echo (TEE), the sensor (transducer) is placed in the esophagus behind the heart. The sensor sends and receives sound waves that produce high quality images of the heart.
TEE is useful in evaluating:
1. Congenital heart disease.
2. Aortic dissection.
3. Aneurysms of the aorta.
4. Valvular heart disease.
5. Infective endocarditis.
6. Cardiac tumors
7. Stroke due to Thromboembolism

Dr. Clifford Thomas, Cardiologist at Premier Heart Care Ltd, decided to lead by example and take on the challenge of more demanding physical activity. After confirming his heart was up to the task, he began ramping up the intensity and duration of his exercise routine - focusing on strength, flexibility, and endurance through hiking and events like the recently held Barbados Hill Challenge.

𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙀𝙘𝙝𝙤: 𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙘𝙡𝙚 (𝙢𝙮𝙤𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙪𝙢)

When performed by experienced cardiac labs, the ECG stress test and physiological stress echo (PSE) are useful tests for detecting blocked coronary arteries. Electrical activity (ECG) and myocardial contractility (Echo) are monitored at rest and during exercise.

Echo imaging increases the accuracy of the test and indicates which myocardial segment (and corresponding artery) is involved.

Blocked coronary arteries cause myocardial infarction or angina:

a) Completely blocked arteries cause heart attacks (myocardial infarction) with scarring of the muscle and impaired myocardial contractility at rest.

b) Partially blocked arteries cause exertional chest pain (angina) with impaired myocardial contractility during exercise.

An Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor (ABPM) is a small device that measures and records your blood pressure over 24 hours, giving a clearer picture of your heart health.

This test helps determine whether elevated readings are due to the “white coat effect” (nervousness at the doctor’s office) or if you have true hypertension that needs to be managed.
