Before midnight Carnival Sunday, MI J’Ouvert ignites the night, a MI traditional J’Ouvert Ritual, a blue and yellow flame trembling beneath great pots or a barrel filled with virgin mud and clay, drawn from deep within the earth…mud and clay that has never tasted daylight, untouched since creation.
As the fire breathes, the mud and clay begins to awaken bubbling, whispering, remembering, carrying the heartbeat of ancestors who once moved through shadow toward freedom.
Into this living mixture fall the sacred gifts of the land:
cinnamon for protection, honey for sweetness, bay leaf for wisdom, cocoa for strength.
Each offering returns to the earth what the earth gave,
from earth to earth, pure, organic, blessed.
