The MI J’Ouvert Mud Ritual.
Long before the music starts, before the paint flies, before the road comes alive, there is silence. In that sacred quiet, we journey to where the earth sleeps, nestled at the foothills of Trinidad’s Northern Range. Here, the soil lies untouched by sunlight, pure and teeming with memory. One by one, we dig deep into the mud, not to take, but to receive. We bow our heads in gratitude, honoring the land for her strength, her spirit, her blessings.
Each handful holds more than just mud or clay; it carries the voices of ancestors, the fire of freedom without limits, the very roots of our soul. We move slowly, reverently, this moment is sacred.
We ask the earth’s permission to carry her essence into our celebration, to paint our skin with her truth, to dance to her heartbeat. And when she answers, it is the softness of a breeze and the fresh scent of rain and roots, we know we have been blessed.
Then, a day later, it begins.
