Living in Trinidad and Tobago means frequent exposure to high UV levels, often from early in the morning. Over time, UV radiation can contribute to premature aging, pigmentation, and increase the risk of skin cancer.

Visible light can also worsen hyperpigmentation and conditions like melasma, particularly in darker skin tones. That’s why sun protection goes beyond preventing a sunburn.

Using a sunscreen with broad-spectrum coverage, as well as filters for visible light, can help protect the skin from both UV radiation and visible light exposure. Sunscreen works best when combined with other sun-safe habits like protective clothing, seeking shade, and reapplying regularly, especially in tropical climates where UV levels are often high early in the day.

Protecting your skin consistently today can help reduce long term damage in the future.

Skin Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder that skin cancer does not always look the same. A new or changing mole, a non-healing sore, a scaly patch, or even a spot that looks different from the rest can all be warning signs worth evaluating.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer and is usually slow growing, while squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) can grow deeper if left untreated. Melanoma, though less common, is the most serious form because of its ability to spread. Early detection remains one of the most important factors in successful treatment.

The ABCDE rule and the “ugly duckling” sign can help identify suspicious lesions, but not all skin cancers follow the same pattern. If you notice any new, changing, bleeding, or non-healing spots, schedule an evaluation with a board-certified dermatologist.

Skin Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder that early detection can save lives.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer worldwide. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 1 in 5 people will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. This is why regular skin checks, both at home and with a dermatologist, are so important.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends performing monthly self-exams to become familiar with your skin. Knowing what is normal for you makes it easier to recognize when something changes.

Skin cancer can also develop in areas that are sun exposed, and not sun exposed.

If you notice any new, changing, or unusual spots, a consultation with our board certified dermatologist, Dr Dolly, can help guide early detection and care.

Rosacea in skin of color can look different and that’s where it’s often missed.

In deeper skin tones, early signs like flushing and persistent redness may be less obvious, so the condition is sometimes overlooked or mistaken for something else.

Instead, rosacea may show up as warmth, stinging, burning, swelling, or acne-like breakouts rather than visible redness alone.

Because of this, diagnosis can be delayed and treatment may not start as early as it should.

This progression shows what consistent, tailored treatment can do over time.

With the right approach, symptoms can be improved, flares can be reduced, and the skin can become more stable even if it’s not completely clear.

Rosacea is a chronic condition that requires ongoing management, especially in skin of color where subtle signs matter.

If you’re noticing changes in your skin that don’t quite add up, a consultation with our board-certified dermatologist, Dr Dolly, can help guide the right diagnosis and treatment plan.

On days when rosacea flares, having the right products can help reduce visible redness and improve overall skin comfort.

Redness-correcting options like EltaMD UV Skin Recovery Red Color Correcting Face Sunscreen SPF 50 do more than offset redness. This 100% mineral sunscreen contains 12.9% Zinc Oxide for broad-spectrum UV protection, which is essential since sun exposure is a common trigger for rosacea flare-ups. It also includes barrier-repair and soothing ingredients to help calm irritation while protecting sensitive skin throughout the day.

Eucerin Anti-Redness Soothing Care is a daily moisturiser designed to calm and stabilise reactive skin. It contains SymSitive, which helps reduce hypersensitivity, and Licochalcone A, an anti-inflammatory ingredient that helps visibly improve redness over time. Its gentle, fragrance-free formula supports the skin barrier, making it suitable for easily irritated skin.

While these products can help improve day-to-day redness and comfort, they work best as part of a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your skin.

If you’re experiencing persistent redness or irritation, a consultation with our board-certified dermatologist, Dr Dolly, can help guide you toward an accurate diagnosis and personalised care plan.
