I was wrong ...

As someone who dedicated years to nurturing children, I thought I knew what loving my child would feel like. The love I feel for my own child is indescribable. Every day, my heart swells with a love so immense it feels like it could burst. Yet, there are moments of overwhelm due to a deep desire to ensure I'm doing right by my son.

Looking back, I feel privileged by the trust parents have placed in me to support their children academically and emotionally. Parenting has given me a greater insight into the challenge of finding the time to implement recommended strategies to support children academically.

After a year of cherished maternity leave, I am back in the office with an expanded team. Together, we are committed to implementing effective remedial intervention programs and psycho-educational evaluations to support children facing academic challenges.

If your child is facing academic challenges and you're unsure of the reasons behind their struggles, or if you're seeking guidance on how best to support them on their academic journey, we're here to help. Contact us to learn more about how our tailored approach can support your child's educational needs.

As a parent, we want what's best for our kids. Repeating a grade is an effective strategy to help a child struggling to keep up with their classmates in their current grade.

In life, you cannot walk before you creep, so allowing your child to move forward to a faster pace environment when they are already struggling at the current pace can be stressful and confusing.

This strategy will help your child to mature and grow without feeling pressured.

Sometimes a helpful practice is to allow your child to play on their tablet/phone when you need to get something done around the house, for work, when you're preparing dinner, or just to get them to sit still so you can get a peaceful and quiet environment.

While this might not be a bad thing, giving your child too much screen time can be a bad thing for their social and mental well-being.

Set a limit to your kid's screen time and let them explore the world around them physically rather than on a device.

There isn't one strategy to support and teach your child how to think critically. As a parent, your role may sometimes be to ask open-ended questions to guide the thinking process.

In other cases, it may be more appropriate to allow your child to experiment and refine their theories on what causes things to happen.

Guiding your child’s critical thinking process can positively impact their problem-solving skills.

Here are some tips and ideas to help your child build a foundation for critical thinking.

Do you remember how much of a burden homework could be? It could be a lot for some children emotionally and physically to get through a pile of homework.

Some parents may even describe getting homework and revision done after work as an extreme sport.

As a parent you are the main support to helping your child learn how to balance responsibilities, deadlines and overall well being.

Here are some tips to help you along.

We all love that feeling we get, when we hit a goal/cross something off of our to-do list.

Children are no different!

Give them the opportunity to feel proud of themselves by breaking up overwhelming tasks into small achievable ones.

Children may feel flustered and u willing to try if given too many tasks at once.

Remember to focus on small achievements and give credit when each task is accomplished.

Thankful Tuesday!

On March 14th, 2020, Everest Developmental Centre's world completely changed. Our program provided a safe space for children with and without learning disabilities to dream, learn, explore and overcome challenges. I saw those children and staff become little families in their own right as they developed a bond and routine every afternoon. This pandemic forced us to close our doors from a well-tuned symphony to a complete halt.

A new rhythm had to be created, and this time, there were no backup singers or even drummers. The band had been dismantled.

Thankfully, although the music had stopped, the crowd of supporters was still there demanding a new tune even though it was a different one.

We shifted our focus to solely one-on-one support and psycho-educational evaluations, changed our location, and thankfully found a whole new sound.

So today, I thank the parents that rave about us in the lunchroom and at family gatherings. Thank you.

I thank the pediatricians and the specialist that continuously send referrals our way. Thank you.

To the teachers who lean on us for support for your students. Thank you!!!!

To the parents that I have not met in person but engage with us on social media. Thank you!

Does this video remind you of anyone?

Asking a question like this may trigger a response, but it will not give the child the tools to solve the problem in the future. In fact, it may contribute to "failure anxiety," causing them to be unwilling to try. Your child may give a blank stare because the task may be a real challenge for them.

When this happens :

1) Acknowledge your frustration and calm yourself down.

2) Ask your child what the problem may be.
"Is it that you do not understand?" or "You can't remember?" "Where do you get confused?" Some children have difficulty identifying where they get lost but give them the space to explain their challenge.

3) Try a different medium to explain the concept: Get concrete examples to explain the concept, find a youtube video or break down the task into much smaller tasks.

4) Remind your child that it is essential to speak up when they are confused and that the adults in their life are here to support them.

5) Lastly, remind your child that mistakes are part of the process of learning. Acknowledge their efforts in completing the task.

Please do not make the dining table/study space a place where they are afraid to grow or ask for help.

Now I need to know, have you tried any of these before?

What other steps do you take when it comes to helping your child understand a topic?

About Us

Our Beginning

A longer time than we’re willing to admit ago, we met as girls on a playground, completely unaware that we will have the same passion as adults. This passion fueled the creation of Everest Developmental Centre (EDC). EDC is built on a common dream shared by an educational psychologist and a child care specialist who love children and have a passion for helping them reach their full potential.
