Have you ever experienced a clear, watery drip from your nose that just won’t quit? It might seem like a run-of-the-mill sinus drip or allergy symptom, but sometimes, it can be something more serious called a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak.
This happens when there is a small tear or hole in the membranes protecting your brain and spinal cord, allowing the fluid that cushions them to escape. CSF leaks can be caused by head injuries, certain surgeries, or even increased pressure inside the skull. And sometimes, they happen spontaneously without an obvious cause.
Why does this matter? Because this clear fluid leak isn’t just uncomfortable, it can increase the risk of infections that require urgent care.
The tricky part is that symptoms of CSF leaks and sinus infections can feel similar, so it’s important to pay attention. Sinus infections usually bring facial pain and thick mucus, while a CSF leak typically involves persistent, watery drainage without congestion.
As such, if you’ve been dealing with unexplained nasal drainage or headaches, please don’t hesitate to give us a call!
