Today is the birthday of Nobel Prize-winning British physicist, Ernst Walton.
Walton searched for ways to produce fast particles and worked on linear particle accelerators. Together with his fellow scientist John Cockcroft, he found a direct method of producing fast particles using high voltages. Walton and Cockcroft bombarded lithium with protons and effectively split its nucleus into two helium atoms. It was the first time one element had been changed to another under full human control.
Walton and Cockcroft shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1951 “for their pioneer work on the transmutation of atomic nuclei by artificially accelerated atomic particles."

Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is increasingly used as a result of its ability to spare healthy tissue, as well as for its enhanced tumor control and curative potential. Most oncologists associate SBRT with photon radiation. However, my clinical experience shows that proton SBRT—which ...

Happy birthday to Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield! He is the scientist behind computerised axial tomography (CAT) scanners, also known as CT scanners.

CT scans involve specialized cameras that can track X-rays, positrons or photons to take measurements and create images taken from several different angles. The result is a cross-sectional image. In medicine, CT scans are used to create images of what’s happening inside of a patient’s body. The resulting images help health specialists diagnose a variety of health conditions. CT scans are also used in other sectors, like industry where they help to analyse objects for quality control purposes.

Hounsfield’s initial CT scanner design could only scan brains, but he later built machines able to scan the whole body. For his contributions to this field, Hounsfield was awarded the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with physicist Allan Cormack.
