Why are my hamstrings so tight?
Everyday we extend our hips in many different ways including flexion; when sitting or bending to pick up something, and extension; when standing from a seated position or standing upright after picking up a fallen item.
-----------------------------------------------
The glutes act as the primary hip extensors meaning that they are the first muscles to be recruited during a movement, while the hamstrings assist in extension.
-------------------------------------------------
If the glutes are not properly activating or are weak, then the hamstrings compensate by becoming more involved in the movement than they should. This compensatory action creates overuse of the hamstring muscles which then become tight and fatigued.
--------------------------------------------------
When this happens, our first instinct is to stretch these tight muscles. However, this is only a temporary fix as it does not address the cause of the issue and so the problem is not solved.
---------------------------------------------------
The solution is therefore to improve hip function through gluteal strengthening to prevent chronic hamstring tightness. Try activating your glutes with exercises such as clamshells, glute bridges and Bulgarian split squats.

AT Fact: ATs provide the same or better outcomes in clinical settings as other health care providers. Results of a comparative analysis of care provided by athletic trainers and physical therapists in a clinical setting indicated that ATs provide the same levels of outcomes, value, and patient satisfaction as physical therapists in a clinical setting (Ref: Reimbursement of Athletic Training by Albohm, MJ; Campbell, Konin, pp. 25)

About Me

Hi! I’m Keva Stephens and I am a Certified Athletic Trainer. I graduated from the University of North Florida where I majored in Athletic Training and completed a minor in Sports Management.

I utilize evidence-based practice in the management of injuries in athletes and active individuals. I always aim not just to treat the symptoms but to treat the cause and thus restore optimum levels of function. This is achieved through a comprehensive injury evaluation. An individualized treatment plan is then devised to get you back up and going as quickly as possible without the reocurrence of injury.

Treatments include but are not limited to:

  • Electrotherapy
