Studies show that home health therapy is more effective at improving patient outcomes than hospital stays for many patients. It has also been shown to be a cost-effective alternative to private hospitalisation, saving you money in the long run.

Research demonstrates that recovery is faster at home than in the hospital, particularly if there is good quality and skilled home health care available to the patient. This is where I step in.

Home health or mobile physical therapy is when you meet with your therapist either in an agreed-upon space or your home.

I exclusively see patients in their homes or preferred space and bring required equipment.

The pros of this are:

-Childcare or elderly-care stresses are alleviated
-Time-saving and in the comfort of your own home
-Your therapist can suggest ways that you can improve your environment to better suit your mobility needs
-Your therapist can see firsthand the equipment you can use during therapy
-Safer for high-risk individuals
-Care is better personalised and family members/support systems are educated in how best to support you in absence of a therapist

The cons are:

-There are sometimes extra distractions at home

Anyone can request home health therapy, whether unable to visit the clinic or purely for your own personal convenience, home health is available to all.

It's not fun to be in pain, to modify your activities, or take time off from doing what you enjoy.

While proper treatment can often rapidly eliminate pain and allow a resumption of activity, we can only speed up human biology so much. When an injury occurs, there is often real irritation or damage to a structure, this takes time to repair and remodel.

Different tissues have different structures and varying degrees of blood flow, therefore, they heal at different rates. Severity of an injury will definitely affect healing time as well.

While we never really know when someone will be fully recovered from an injury or a chronic problem we have enough of an idea about the minimum amount of time it will take.

Patients often ask me about the effectiveness of treatments done to them (passive) as opposed to treatments they do for themselves (active). It is my opinion that passive treatments are useful on occasion, but should never replace active treatments as these are the principal forms of rehabilitation.

Passive treatments can encourage patients to begin an active approach as they appreciate that this form of treatment is not a solution long term and do not rely on them soley.

Both forms of treatment positively affect our nervous systems on our path to recovery and some processes/techniques work better for some over others. Excellent rehabilitation is active, informed by education and promotes confidence. A side order of passive treatment can help facilitate this.

Should rehab be pain-free? Or should you ignore and bear it?

Physical therapists often tell patients it is crucial to avoid painful exercises, as pain is the bodyโ€™s way of telling you to stop!

However, decades long research has answered this question unequivocally: rehab does NOT need to be pain free! Trying to function and build strength while totally avoiding pain is not possible and a reason patients fail to improve.

A few crucial points from the above pain monitoring model:

๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸพPain of 2-5 is actually encouraged over pain of 0-2.

๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸพItโ€™s the most effective way to elicit adaptations needed for recovery whilst avoiding worsening injuries.

๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸพWhile small increases in pain during rehab are okay it is important that your symptoms improve week to week.

When you are uncertain if an exercise is safe just remember:

๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸพYour pain during and after an exercise should be tolerable

๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸพAn increase in pain from day to day is cause for decreasing the intensity of the exercises you are performing

Hope this helps those of you unsure about pain levels during exercise!

Balance for an older individual is very important. A predictor of future falls is past and current falls. This exercise depicts an older individual standing on an unstable surface whilst tossing bean bags. This action moves her centre of gravity away from her base of support, forcing her to lose her balance. The important part of this exercise is her regaining her balance by bringing her centre gravity back over her base of support.

It does not matter if one loses their balance, it is the regaining of said balance that is key.
