Lumps and bumps...
Subdermal (under skin) lumps are palpable masses beneath the skin that may arise from benign, infectious, or malignant causes. Common examples include lipomas, epidermoid/dermoid cysts, abscesses, enlarged lymph nodes, and less commonly, soft tissue sarcomas.
Clinical evaluation involves:
Detailed history
Physical examination.
Imaging (e.g. ultrasound)
Fine-needle aspiration or biopsy may be required for suspicious lesions.
Management depends on the underlying cause:
Benign lesions (e.g., lipomas, cysts): Often require no treatment unless symptomatic or cosmetically concerning; surgical excision may be performed.
Infectious/inflammatory lumps (e.g., abscesses): Managed with incision and drainage, sometimes antibiotics.
Suspicious or malignant lesions: Require biopsy, referral to a specialist (e.g., surgical oncology), and appropriate oncologic management.
Key principle: Any rapidly growing, hard, fixed, or irregular lump, especially with systemic symptoms (fever, weight loss, night sweats), warrants urgent evaluation to exclude malignancy.
