Today, the National Centre for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), alongside the UNIT, proudly joined the global community in observing World Down Syndrome Day.

Students, staff, and members of the UNIT came together in a vibrant show of support, wearing colorful socks to celebrate diversity, promote inclusion, and raise awareness for individuals with Down syndrome. The atmosphere was filled with energy, unity, and pride as we highlighted the unique abilities and contributions of every individual.

At NCPD, we remain committed to fostering an environment where every person is valued, empowered, and given the opportunity to thrive.

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day ❤️

Every year on March 10, organizations around the world observe National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD) to highlight the impact of HIV and AIDS on women and girls and to stand in support of those at risk of, or living with, HIV.

This year marks the 20th annual observance, under the theme “Hope, Health, and Healing: Overcoming Barriers to HIV/AIDS Treatment for Women and Girls.” The theme draws attention to the real challenges many women and girls face when trying to access care — including stigma, limited healthcare access, financial barriers, and geographic limitations.

Raising awareness, promoting early testing, improving access to treatment, and strengthening community support are critical steps toward improving health outcomes and preventing new infections.

At NCPD, we recognise the importance of equitable healthcare access and continued advocacy to ensure that women and girls living with HIV receive the care, dignity, and support they deserve.

Hope grows when barriers are removed and support is strengthened.

World Glaucoma Week 👁️

This week we recognise World Glaucoma Week, a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about glaucoma — one of the leading causes of preventable blindness worldwide.

Glaucoma often develops without early symptoms, gradually damaging the optic nerve and affecting vision. Because of this, regular eye examinations are essential for early detection and timely treatment. Early intervention can slow or prevent vision loss.

At NCPD, we encourage everyone to prioritise eye health and support awareness that promotes prevention, accessibility, and care for persons living with visual impairments.

Protect your sight. Early detection makes the difference.

Rare Disease Day 🧬

Today, we observe Rare Disease Day, a global reminder that even conditions affecting small numbers of people deserve recognition, research, and support.

Rare diseases often come with delayed diagnoses, limited treatment options, and significant social and economic challenges. Persons with rare conditions — including many with disabilities — face unique barriers to healthcare, education, and inclusion. Awareness is the first step toward equity and meaningful support.

At NCPD, we stand with individuals and families affected by rare diseases, advocating for access, understanding, and systemic change.

Rare is not invisible. Awareness drives action.

Anosmia Awareness Day 👃

Today, we observe Anosmia Awareness Day, raising awareness about the loss or absence of the sense of smell — a condition that significantly affects safety, nutrition, mental wellbeing, and quality of life.

Anosmia may be congenital or acquired through illness, injury, or infection. Despite being invisible, its impact is real and often underestimated. Increased awareness helps promote early assessment, safety planning, and appropriate support.

At NCPD, we recognise the importance of understanding less visible conditions and advocating for inclusive health awareness and support.

Invisible conditions still deserve visibility and care.

Time to Talk Day 🗣️💚

Today is Time to Talk Day, a reminder that open conversations about mental health save lives.

Too many people struggle in silence due to stigma, misunderstanding, or lack of access to support — especially persons with disabilities, who often face additional barriers to being heard and supported. Talking creates connection, reduces isolation, and opens pathways to help.

At NCPD, we encourage safe, respectful spaces where mental health conversations are normal, inclusive, and taken seriously.

Talking is not weakness. Silence is the risk.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week 💜

This week, we observe Eating Disorders Awareness Week, drawing attention to serious mental health conditions that affect individuals of all ages, genders, and backgrounds.

Eating disorders are not lifestyle choices — they are complex illnesses that often require early recognition, professional care, and sustained support. Persons with disabilities may face additional risk factors and barriers to diagnosis and treatment, making awareness and access to care even more critical.

At NCPD, we advocate for understanding that leads to early intervention, reduced stigma, and inclusive mental health support systems.

Awareness leads to understanding. Support leads to recovery.
