🧴 August is Psoriasis Action Month
The National Centre for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) joins the global effort to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote better care for individuals living with psoriasis, a chronic skin condition that affects millions worldwide.

📌 FACT:
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes the rapid buildup of skin cells, leading to scaling, inflammation, itching, and discomfort. It affects over 125 million people globally and can appear on any part of the body. Psoriasis is not contagious, but it can deeply impact mental, emotional, and social well-being. Triggers include stress, infections, and certain medications, but with the right treatment, symptoms can be managed.

💡 Awareness leads to action. Let’s support those living with visible and invisible conditions through education, empathy, and access to care.

🚨 Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) Awareness Month
The National Centre for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) brings attention to Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a rare but serious medical condition that can lead to long-term disability and life-threatening complications.

📌 FACT:
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a severe, often unpredictable reaction to medication or infection that causes the skin and mucous membranes to blister, peel, and shed—similar to a severe burn. It requires immediate hospitalization and can result in complications affecting vision, skin, and internal organs. Survivors may experience long-term physical and psychological challenges, making inclusive care and awareness critical.

⚠️ Medication safety, early recognition of symptoms, and access to emergency care can save lives.

🧬 August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month
The National Centre for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) joins the global community in recognizing SMA Awareness Month, shining a light on the challenges and resilience of those living with this rare neuromuscular condition.

📌 FACT:
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disorder that affects the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, leading to progressive muscle weakness and loss of movement. It is the leading genetic cause of infant death, but with early diagnosis and advanced treatment, individuals with SMA are living longer and fuller lives. Early intervention, assistive devices, and supportive therapies are key.

🧡 Let’s raise awareness, advocate for early screening, and support inclusive care and access for all affected by SMA.

🟢 Gastroschisis Awareness Day – July 30
Today, the National Centre for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) stands in support of infants and families affected by gastroschisis, a rare birth defect that requires urgent medical care and ongoing support.

📌 FACT:
Gastroschisis is a congenital condition where a baby is born with their intestines outside of the body through a hole in the abdominal wall. It occurs in about 1 in every 2,000 live births and requires surgery soon after birth. With timely care, many babies go on to live healthy lives—but long-term complications can include feeding difficulties, growth delays, and developmental challenges.

💚 Let’s raise awareness, show compassion, and support inclusive care for all—starting from birth.

🩸 World Hepatitis Day – July 28
The National Centre for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) recognizes World Hepatitis Day as a crucial time to raise awareness, promote prevention, and support those living with viral hepatitis.

📌 FACT:
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, most often caused by viral infections—types A, B, C, D, and E. Globally, over 350 million people are living with hepatitis B or C, which can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, or liver cancer if left untreated. Hepatitis is preventable, treatable, and in many cases, curable. Yet millions remain undiagnosed and unaware.

🛡️ Know your status. Get tested. Get treated. Together, we can eliminate hepatitis.

🔬 Did You Know? July is Sarcoma Awareness Month 💛
At the National Centre for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), we continue to educate and raise awareness on rare conditions that affect our community. Today, we spotlight Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST) — a rare and often misunderstood type of cancer.

📌 FACT:
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare soft tissue sarcomas of the digestive tract, most often found in the stomach or small intestine. They are usually driven by mutations in the KIT or PDGFRA genes, though some have no known mutation ("wildtype"). GISTs can be hard to detect early due to vague symptoms and may spread to the liver or peritoneum if not caught early. Accurate diagnosis requires specialized testing, and treatment should be handled by doctors experienced in GIST care.

🎗️ Let’s continue advocating for early diagnosis, access to specialized care, and support for persons affected by rare cancers like GIST.

🎗️ July is Sarcoma Awareness Month
At the National Centre for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), we stand in solidarity with individuals and families affected by rare cancers like sarcoma. This month, we raise awareness and promote early detection, education, and support.

📌 FACT:
Sarcoma is a rare group of cancers that start in the bones or soft tissues such as fat, muscle, nerves, or blood vessels. While it makes up only 1% of adult cancers, it accounts for about 15% of childhood cancers. With over 70 types—including bone sarcomas and soft tissue sarcomas like GIST—early diagnosis and specialized treatment are critical.

🩺 Awareness saves lives. Let's continue advocating for access to healthcare, inclusive support, and informed communities.
