Your child doesn’t hate reading/math/puzzles/writing. They hate the feelings they’ve linked to it.

Often, when children avoid something, it’s not because they dislike the task itself, it’s because the way it’s presented makes them feel:
❌ Overwhelmed
❌ Unsure where to begin
❌ Afraid they’ll get it wrong
❌ Unsure how long it will take

This is especially true for neurodivergent children, whose executive function skills like task initiation, planning, and organisation may still be developing.

The fix?
1️⃣ Break it down into bite-sized steps.
2️⃣ Give clear, simple instructions.
3️⃣ Let them see the “finish line” before they begin.
4️⃣ Celebrate progress, not perfection.

✨ A New School Year, New Opportunities to Thrive! ✨

At Eureka Kids TT, we help children build the foundational skills they need to succeed at home, school and beyond. As a pediatric occupational therapist, I support students to strengthen the underlying skills that make learning possible, like:
✨ Sensory processing & self-regulation
✨ Visual-motor, fine motor and gross motor skills
✨ Executive function & organisational skills
✨ Social and emotional skills

This academic year, I’m offering specialised programs for handwriting, reading and school success, each tailored to help children become confident, independent learners.

📩 Send a DM or WhatApp to learn how we can support your child this school year.

Essential for some. Beneficial for all.

That’s the magic of Universal Design for Learning.

Instead of waiting to react to challenges, UDL invites us to proactively design learning environments that anticipate and celebrate student differences.

For neurodivergent learners, simple changes in the environment or presentation of content can make the difference between frustration and flourishing.

But here's the beauty:
• The child who needs visual schedules isn’t the only one who benefits from structure.
• The child who needs movement breaks isn’t the only one who gets antsy after sitting too long.
• The child who struggles with written expression isn’t the only one who appreciates choices in how to show what they’ve learned.

When we prioritise accessibility, flexibility, and respect for different learning needs, we create classrooms where all children can show up as their full selves.

Want help making your classroom more inclusive? DM me to chat about parent and teacher workshops or OT-led environmental walkthroughs.

Together, we can design spaces where everyone belongs.

✨ Certificate unlocked! ✨

After three weeks of intensive study, daily practical activities and a lot of homework, I’m officially certified in Methods for Teaching Dyslexics with The Dyslexia Association of Trinidad and Tobago!

As an OT, people often asked why I was taking the course. The answer is simple: I see so many children, especially those with ADHD or Level 1 Autism, struggling with reading and I wanted to give them MORE.

This course gave me hands-on experience in:
✨ Assessing and planning teaching programmes tailored to each child’s abilities and challenges
✨ A deeper study of word structure and multi-sensory methods for reading and cursive writing
✨ Using games and practical activities to make literacy fun and meaningful
✨ Making my own games and activities

Now, I can screen for dyslexia-related challenges, identify each child’s unique learning profile, and create strength-based intervention plans that turn reading frustration into confidence.

I'm excited to start offering 1:1 reading interventions and to integrate some of the strategies I learned into my regular OT sessions.

If your child struggles with reading or writing, let’s work together to unlock their potential and help them thrive in school.

Some children jump, spin and crash to feel regulated or "just right". Others may cover their ears, avoid messy textures or feel overwhelmed in busy places.

As pediatric OTs, we recognise sensory differences as real, valid and worthy of support.

We don’t force kids to “fit in", we help them understand their bodies, advocate for their needs and thrive in environments that feel safe to them.

Sensory processing differences aren’t something to “fix" (except if the child is hurting themselves or others). They’re something to understand and support.

Save this post to support children who experience the world through a different sensory lens.

Let’s talk about neurodiversity; a word you may be seeing more often but not always explained clearly.

Neurodiversity describes the range of natural brain differences in how we think, learn, sense, move, and interact with others.

Yet many systems including schools, healthcare, even therapy, still focus on what neurodivergent children can’t do. As pediatric OTs, we can help shift that focus.

• We move beyond deficits.
• We affirm difference.
• We support positive identity development.

Our goal? Helping every child feel safe, valued, and empowered to be exactly who they are.

Share this post with someone who needs to hear that differences should be celebrated.

I am thrilled to launch cohort 3 of my program - The School Success Blueprint!

What is the School Success Blueprint?
The School Success Blueprint is a small-group, therapist-led program that supports children in primary school. It’s designed for students who need extra support with reading, writing, comprehension, math, and executive functioning; the thinking skills that help with focus, planning, and follow-through.

Who is it for?
✨Children ages 5-12 (grouped by age and skill level)
✨Diagnosed or undiagnosed learning challenges including:
ADHD
Level 1 Autism
Dyslexia
Dysgraphia
Dyscalculia
Executive Functioning difficulties
✨Children who benefit from a smaller group environment with extra visual, sensory, and hands-on learning support
✨ Children who meltdown or refuse to participate in the classroom

What We Focus On
We blend occupational therapy, academic support, and executive function coaching into one powerful program.

Academic Foundations:
✨Handwriting (letter formation, line placement, spacing)
✨Creative writing (idea generation, sentence construction)
✨Reading
✨Math reasoning and number sense

Foundational Learning Processes:
✨Visual and Auditory Perception (recognising, remembering, and making sense of what they see and hear)
✨Visualisation Strategies

Thinking & Doing Skills:
✨Task initiation and completion
✨Planning and organisation
✨Attention and working memory
✨Self-monitoring and problem-solving
✨Flexible thinking and emotional regulation

Sensory & Self-Regulation:
✨Tools to help with focus and participation
✨Movement-based activities for regulation
✨Task adaptations to reduce frustration and boost confidence

We believe you are your child’s most important coach. That’s why the School Success Blueprint includes:
✨A 3 hour in-person interactive workshop
✨2 Parent Coaching Check-ins
✨Personalised tips and strategies for home
✨End-of-program progress summary

“He can focus on video games for hours but can’t sit for 10 minutes of homework!”

Sound familiar?

You're not alone and there's a science-backed reason for this.

Children with ADHD aren’t lazy or avoiding responsibility. Their brains are wired to seek stimulation, interest, novelty, and immediate feedback. Video games deliver that in spades. Homework? Not so much.

In this post, I’m breaking down why your child lights up for gaming but melts down for math worksheets and what you can do to make learning feel less like a battle and more like play.

Save this post for the next time homework turns into a tug-of-war.

Neurodivergent children are often hyper-aware of their challenges.

Because that’s where the focus is.

Every day, they get reminders of what they need to do better, differently, or more of.

But how often do they get to hear about what they’re already good at?

Their strengths, like creativity, determination, humor, empathy, or curiosity, are just as real but they get overshadowed by correction, intervention, and redirection.

Over time, this imbalance can quietly chip away at their self-esteem.

As adults, we can change this story.

Start pointing out what’s right.
Celebrate what’s working.
Reflect back the moments of joy, brilliance, and growth.

Because when we name their strengths, they can start to see them too.

"They used to love math in preschool, what changed?"

We stopped using math manipulatives.
We started rushing children to solve abstract problems before their brains were ready for that kind of thinking.

Abstract thinking isn't automatic, it’s built.
And just like a strong building needs framing, children need concrete, visual tools to help structure their understanding.

Manipulatives aren't "babyish".
They're brain-builders.
They're developmentally appropriate.
And they're still essential, well beyond the early years.

Let’s stop treating math manipulatives as a crutch and start seeing them for what they are: a framework for real, lasting learning.

Many students struggle not only because they don't understand math, but because the page is visually overwhelming.

Graph paper creates structure, boundaries and predictability, all things our brains crave when organising visual and spatial information. It's a math tool, a visual support, a motor planning guide and a quiet confidence booster.

Whether it's lining up digits, drawing a number line, or organising parts of a whole, graph paper gives students the visual anchors they need to be successful.

Are you struggling to get your child or student to copy from the board without frustration, fatigue, and skipping or repeating words?

You're not alone and it's not just about their handwriting.

Copying from the board is a complex task that relies on visual processing, motor skills, executive function and postural control - areas that many neurodivergent learners find challenging.

Swipe to see how these skills affect copying from the board and learn strategies to make copying easier, more efficient and less stressful.
