Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events before age 18 that can have lasting effects on mental, emotional, and physical well-being. The original ACEs study by the CDC and Kaiser Permanente identified ten key types of childhood adversity, categorized into three main areas:
1) Abuse – Physical, emotional, or sexual.
2) Neglect – Physical or emotional.
3) Household Dysfunction – Exposure to domestic violence, parental separation, substance abuse, mental illness, or incarceration.
Higher ACE scores are linked to increased risks of anxiety, depression, PTSD, addiction, and chronic illnesses like heart disease and diabetes. These experiences can also affect relationships, emotional regulation, and overall quality of life.
However, ACEs are not a life sentence. Therapy provides a structured, supportive space to process past trauma, develop coping strategies, and build resilience. At HICOL CMC, we offer evidence-based approaches tailored to each individual, helping clients break free from patterns of distress and create healthier, more fulfilling lives. Healing is possible, and professional support can make a significant difference.
