A Brief History of Traditional Chinese Medicine
When former U.S. President Richard Nixon visited China in 1971, his visit marked a turning point in global awareness of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This historic trip opened cultural and medical exchanges between China and the West, sparking widespread curiosity about TCM's holistic approaches to health. Acupuncture, in particular, gained prominence as people worldwide sought alternatives to conventional medicine. However, the scientific community has struggled to fully understand or validate the meridian theory—a foundational concept in TCM that describes energy pathways in the body. Institutions such as the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Harvard University have collaborated with Chinese research teams to investigate this theory, but it remains an enigma.
The Chinese government has consistently prioritized meridian research in its Five-Year Plans, starting with the 7th Plan and continuing through the current 14th Plan. These efforts reflect the importance placed on integrating ancient medical wisdom with modern scientific inquiry. Despite the focus, progress was slow until the 12th Five-Year Plan which ran from 2011 - 2015. However, back in 1989, Academia Sinica—Taiwan’s leading academic institution—achieved a groundbreaking milestone by uncovering a connection between meridians and harmonics through blood pressure wave analysis. This discovery significantly advanced the scientific understanding of meridian theory, opening new avenues for research and application.
Throughout its history, China has encountered numerous diseases introduced from foreign regions. Despite these challenges, TCM has safeguarded the health of its people for over two millennia by employing an integrative and systematic approach. At the core of this approach lie meridian theory and pulse diagnosis. Meridian theory offers guiding principles for understanding the body’s energy flow and its role in health and disease, while pulse diagnosis provides detailed insights into the body’s physiological and pathological states. Together, these tools form a comprehensive framework for diagnosis and treatment.
TCM practitioners and acupuncturists actively prescribe herbal formulas and perform acupuncture treatments grounded in meridian theory and pulse diagnosis to address a wide range of illnesses. These practices reflect a deep understanding of the body’s interconnected systems and aim to restore balance and harmony. This approach parallels the immune system’s ability to generate diverse antibodies through a few foundational mechanisms, equipping it to combat a vast array of antigens. By embracing these principles, TCM continues to provide holistic and effective healthcare solutions that resonate with patients seeking comprehensive wellness.
How Modern Medicine Incorporates Chinese Medicine through Technological Advancements
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has long relied on pulse diagnosis—a method used to assess a patient's health by feeling the pulse at different locations on the wrist. This technique, documented in ancient texts like the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon), Nanjing (Classic of Difficult Issues), and Shang Han Za Bing Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases), remains a cornerstone of TCM. However, modern medical science, particularly hemodynamics (the study of blood flow and circulation), has struggled to fully explain how pulse diagnosis works.
The Discovery of Resonance in the Arteries
In 1991, our research team in Sinica Academia lead by Professor WK Wang, identified an overlooked phenomenon in conventional hemodynamic theories: resonance in the arteries. This means that blood pressure waves moving through the arteries follow specific rhythmic patterns, similar to how sound waves resonate in a musical instrument. By 1997, we formulated a radial resonance equation, which helped describe how these waves travel and interact within the body.
By applying this resonance theory and validating it through both animal studies and clinical trials, we demonstrated that pulse diagnosis is not merely a subjective practice but is based on measurable physiological phenomena. This led to the development of a pulse diagnostic apparatus, a device designed to objectively assess a person’s health based on pulse patterns.
How Technology Enhances Chinese Medicine
Through clinical research, we discovered that the H.C.V. (Coefficient of Variations of Harmonics Magnitude) in our pulse diagnostic device could provide quantitative (measurable) data about a patient’s condition. This means doctors can now objectively evaluate disease severity and monitor treatment effectiveness over time.
Furthermore, by analyzing pathological (disease-related) and pharmacological (medicine-related) data, we developed a way to scientifically validate traditional herbal formulas. For example, classical herbal prescriptions recorded in the Shang Han Za Bing Lun, such as the White Tiger and Green Dragon formulas, can now be systematically matched to specific conditions based on data-driven analysis.
Meridians and Their Connection to Harmonics
In TCM, meridians are pathways in the body through which vital energy (Qi) flows. We found that different harmonics (frequencies in pulse waves) correspond to specific meridians:
First harmonic → Liver meridian
Second harmonic → Kidney (Renal) meridian
Third harmonic → Spleen meridian
Fourth harmonic → Lung meridian
Fifth harmonic → Stomach meridian
Sixth harmonic → Gallbladder meridian
Seventh harmonic → Bladder meridian
Eighth harmonic → Large Intestine meridian
Ninth harmonic → Triple Burner meridian (associated with metabolic and fluid regulation)
Tenth harmonic → Small Intestine meridian
Understanding these harmonic-meridian relationships allows us to integrate TCM principles with modern diagnostic tools, providing a scientific foundation for traditional healing practices.
The Future: AI and TeleHealth for Personalized Medicine
With advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing, particularly through Amazon Web Services (AWS), we can now bring TCM into the digital age:
Real-time TeleHealth: Patients can receive remote pulse diagnosis at home.
Precision AIHerbs: AI-driven analysis helps personalize herbal medicine recommendations.
AI Cloud Doctors: Digital consultations and diagnostics are now possible without geographical limitations.
These innovations enable preventative and personalized medicine, bridging the gap between ancient wisdom and modern healthcare. By integrating TCM with cutting-edge technology, we can offer scientifically validated, accessible, and effective healthcare solutions worldwide.
Bringing Traditional Chinese Medicine into the Digital Age with Pulse Diagnosis and TeleHealth
With the invention of the Pulse Diagnosis Device and the Meridian Medicine Blood Pressure Monitor, we have secured global patents in multiple regions, including Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Australia, China, the United States, and Europe. These patents have allowed us to integrate pulse diagnosis technology into a modern blood pressure monitor, transforming it into a Harmonic Blood Pressure Monitor.
Unlike conventional sphygmomanometers (blood pressure monitors), which only measure systolic (upper number) and diastolic (lower number) pressure, this advanced device also detects harmonics of blood pressure—providing deeper insights into a person’s health based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles.

How the Harmonic Blood Pressure Monitor Works
The Bluetooth-enabled Harmonic Blood Pressure Monitor transmits digital signals to a smartphone, which then uploads the data to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. This cloud-based system allows for:
Data Storage – Securely saving and tracking a patient’s health history.
AI Computation – Using artificial intelligence to analyze pulse harmonics and blood pressure readings.
Advanced Biomedical Applications – Providing real-time diagnosis, personalized treatment plans, and predictive health outcomes.
This cloud-based system, called "Glaze Cloud," allows doctors and patients to instantly access harmonic pulse data for both diagnosis (pathologic matrix) and treatment (pharmacologic matrix). No matter where a doctor or patient is located, this system enables remote medical services through an internet-enabled smartphone.
