Walking with Two Poles, Walking with Health and Joy
My first encounter with walking poles was at the Taiwan’s Up And Go Pole Walking School. What moved me most back then was realizing how a simple tool could become a medium for life transformation. With the poles, it wasn’t just about physical support—it was also the manifestation of psychological strength. In that moment, I saw that pole-walking was more than exercise; it was a form of life education. Later, through the invitation of Positive2U, Teacher Kuo Chien-Chung came several times to Penang and Kuala Lumpur for sharing and guidance, which deepened my understanding of pole-walking. Walking poles are not merely tools for exercise; they also grant people the courage to “take steps once again.” Physical change drives inner transformation: when someone can stand again and move forward, hope and confidence begin to grow from within.
When I began leading community group sessions, I experienced this truth even more deeply. Someone who once sat in a wheelchair was able to gradually stand up and walk step by step with the help of poles, joining the group. Another, who had initially only watched from the sidelines, eventually joined in and revealed a long-lost smile. These changes made me witness firsthand that behind physical recovery lies psychological growth and self-affirmation.
What touched me even more was the power of companionship. I saw family members bring chairs and sit nearby, simply to encourage their loved ones with every step they took. This kind of support not only gave strength to the participants, but also reminded all of us of the love that sustains us. Growth never happens in isolation—it is always nurtured and witnessed in relationships.
During group sessions, I also saw the perseverance of participants. Even when light rain was falling, they still arrived as planned. On 24 August 2025, I watched them arrive one by one through the drizzle, and I was especially moved.
What touched me was—rain did not stop them, but instead revealed their resilience. That persistence made me truly feel the power of knowing “what I want.” What touched me was—every figure walking through the rain was not only showing up for the activity, but also fulfilling a promise to themselves. What moves us most in life is the power of “I said it, and I did it.” What touched me was—the arrival of each participant encouraged the others. One person’s persistence may be lonely, but a group’s companionship becomes strength. On the journey of life, we all need such “fellow travelers.”
Their anticipation and perseverance were not only about pursuing health but also about responding to the meaning of life itself. Psychological research shows that consistent participation in exercise not only brings joy to body and mind but also enhances self-efficacy—helping people believe, “I can.”
I love making pole walking fun, often adding songs and games. Laughter and rhythm turn walking into more than just movement—it becomes a release for the soul. Joy is an essential
nutrient for mental health; and when exercise and joy come together, they bring true healing of “body and mind as one.”
Teacher Kuo often says: “With two poles in hand, health will follow.” But after these group sessions at Sungai Ara Waterfront in Penang, I want to add one more word: “With two poles in hand, health and joy will follow.” This isn’t a slogan—it’s what I have truly witnessed. The smiles of participants, the companionship of families, the persistence despite the rain—all remind me that walking poles carry more than physical steps; they carry the strength to move forward in life.
Walking poles bring physical strength, psychological growth, and life connection. I have always believed: no matter what stage of life you are in, you can start again—bring your poles, bring your hope, and walk toward health, and toward joy.
The value of life does not lie in how fast you walk, but in whether you walk with awareness and meaning. When body and mind are nourished together, pole walking is not merely exercise but a journey of life education. Only those who dare to take the first step can see different scenery. No one can walk it for you—you must walk it for yourself.
I invite you to join us at the Positive2U Up & Go Pole Walking School—let’s walk toward health, walk toward joy, and walk toward the meaning of life together!
