在藥物研發過程中，科學家有時會發現意料之外的「多效性」（pleiotropic）效果，也就是藥物產生了多種非預期的影響 (17:21)。GLP-1藥物就是一個典型的例子。

研究人員在進行大規模臨床試驗時，驚訝地發現許多受試者在沒有刻意戒菸的情況下，自然而
然地戒掉了菸癮 (19:19)。更令人稱奇的是，後續的軼事報告與一項大型退伍軍人事務部研究 (19:37) 顯示，部分使用者在賭博、網路購物等其他成癮行為上的衝動也顯著減少了 (19:24)。

這一發現為藥物的應用開闢了全新的可能性。它暗示GLP-1藥物可能不只作用於食慾，更可能深刻影響大腦中與獎勵和成癮相關的「享樂途徑」。為此，禮來公司已啟動了針對躁鬱症、重度憂鬱症等心理健康狀況的新研究，希望能解開其在大腦中的作用機制 (19:49)。
