For decades, hepatitis C has been recognized as a major global public health challenge, with an estimated 58 million people living with chronic infection worldwide. Although no vaccine currently exists, hepatitis C is now curable with highly effective therapies.

In alignment with the World Health Organization goal of eliminating viral hepatitis by 2030, Taiwan has reached the 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 under the Path to Elimination framework.

Through universal health coverage and national programs, hepatitis C screening and treatment are widely accessible.
As of June 2025:
• 90.2% of individuals with chronic hepatitis C have been diagnosed
• 92.6% of diagnosed patients have received treatment
Taiwan also ensures:
• 100% blood screening
• 100% safe medical injection practices
• Comprehensive harm reduction programs

Guided by the principle of Leave No One Behind, targeted efforts have expanded care to high-risk populations, including people living with HIV and other vulnerable groups.

Over the past two decades, Taiwan has also seen a significant decline in liver cancer incidence and mortality—closely linked to its hepatitis prevention and treatment policies.

The “Taiwan Model” demonstrates that elimination is achievable when science, political commitment, and equity come together. Taiwan remains committed to sharing its experience and working with the international community toward a hepatitis-free future.

This week, we are honored to welcome a distinguished delegation from Ukraine to the Taiwan International Healthcare Training Center (TIHTC) and Taipei Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

In Taiwan, this festival has its own unique charm:

In Pingxi District, people write their hopes and prayers on sky lanterns and release them into the night sky. Each lantern carries a wish for health, success, and peace.
