The Sancol & Recovery Community of Zanzibar Tanzania has been developed on the basis of estimates on the presence of approximately 25,000 Injection Drug Users (IDU) in Tanzania and has seen a rapid rise in the number of People Who Inject Drugs (PWID), specifically heroin. While the overall HIV prevalence in Tanzania has declined recently to 5.6%, in 2009, the HIV prevalence among PWID remains alarmingly high at 35%

Self-supporting groups started in Zanzibar in 2008, Zanzibar Drug Control Commission. This enabled to scale up Recovery Community by recruiting peers in recovery, initially few men joined together and entered the program to overcome their addiction and support others. Now there are strong bonds and links through-out the recovery community with hundreds of recovery members supported by Sober Houses throughout Tanzania. With this in mind, we are able to act with Integrity and Honesty that allow our partners in the community to rely on our clear, consistent message through treatment and reliable actions which are Strength, Courage and Hope. The program supports both men and women and does not discriminate against age, race, religion, disability or sexual preference. The Sancol & Recovery Community Of Zanzibar Rehabilitation Center intend to works with organizations whose members reflect religious, spiritual and secular pathways of recovery. As the same time we have no affiliation with any Government Organizations, Religions or Law-enforcement groups. The Out-reach and the in-patient programs are been operated through well trained and experienced recovering addicts whom have a long term of abstinence of any type of drugs and even whom have gone through the same process. As some who are managing the institution and some as the facilitators, which they are role models to the community and the new-comers. The team works along together to support the workload. Due to our knowledge of understanding, and the disease of addiction is completely realistic for therapeutic value of one addict helping another is without parallel. Facing feelings

“We may fear that being in touch with our feelings will trigger an overwhelming chain reaction of pain and panic.”

Basic Text, p. 30

––––=––––

While we were using, many of us were unable or unwilling to feel many emotions. If we were happy, we used to make us happier. If we were angry or depressed, we used to mask those feelings. In continuing this pattern throughout our active addiction, we became so emotionally confused that we weren’t sure what normal emotions were anymore.

After being in recovery for some time, we find that the emotions we had suppressed suddenly begin to surface. We may find that we do not know how to identify our feelings. What we may be feeling as rage may only be frustration. What we perceive as suicidal depression may simply be sadness. These are the times when we need to seek the assistance of our sponsor or other members of NA. Going to a meeting and talking about what is happening in our lives can help us to face our feelings instead of running from them in fear.

––––=––––

Just for today: I will not run from the uncomfortable emotions I may experience. I will use the support of my friends in recovery to help me face my emotions.
