👶🏾 A 4kg Breech Baby. No Time for Theatre. But Midwife Dinah Shija Nkwabi Was Ready — and She Saved Two Lives

On March 14, 2025, a mother of five arrived at Kishapu District Hospital in active labour. Her scan had shown a breech baby weighing 4kg.
She was already 8cm dilated.

The doctor and theatre team were informed — but labour progressed quickly. Her water broke, with meconium present. She was now fully dilated. There was no time to wait.

But Dinah wasn’t afraid.
She had just received MEST training in February through the Thamini Uzazi Project in Shinyanga. This is exactly what she had trained for.

💪🏾 Dinah acted fast:
✅ Supported the mother
✅ Delivered the legs and buttocks
✅ Protected the cord and used the Løvset manoeuvre
✅ Just as the doctor arrived, she safely delivered the head

Then a cry.A healthy baby boy, 4kg, Apgar 7 to 10.🧡 Mother and baby were monitored for 48 hours and went home well.

This is the power of training.
This is the power of midwives. 👊🏾

📢 Let’s invest in midwives like Dinah:
✔️ Emergency skills training
✔️ Tools and equipment
✔️ Respect and recognition

🗣️ Tag a midwife. Share your story. Let’s give them the spotlight they deserve.

Behind every healthy mother and baby is a midwife working magic

They manage complications, offer reassurance, and deliver new life with love and skill.

In Tanzania alone, thousands of midwives work tirelessly in villages, towns, and hospitals — bringing over 60% of babies into this world. 👶🏾💛

To our midwives: You are strength, you are hope, you are life-savers.

👊🏾A NIGHT OF SAVING LIVES👊🏾

At exactly midnight on July 6, 2025, our heroic midwife Amani Felix, with just 3 years of experience, from S**a Health Centre, Kahama–Shinyanga, performed an unforgettable act of bravery.

A young mother, only 21 years old, arrived in active labour — completely unaware she was carrying twins. The first baby was delivered safely, but the second was in a breech position and was born unresponsive, showing no signs of breathing. 🌙👶🏽

Thanks to the life-saving skills Amani gained through the MEST training under the Thamini Uzazi Salama Project, he quickly and carefully assisted the breech delivery and immediately performed newborn resuscitation. Within moments, the baby took their first breath, cried, and stabilized and both mother and babies survived without needing referral to a higher facility.

This is the power of skilled, well-prepared midwives. ❤️👏🏽

🩺 Every emergency demands courage, knowledge, and swift action — and midwives like Amani, even with just 3 years in the field, remind us why investing in midwifery skills saves lives every single day.

Let’s celebrate Aman and every midwife out there making a difference.

COURAGE, SKILL & THE POWER OF MIDWIFERY!

At TAMA, we proudly celebrate the incredible strength of mothers and the life-saving skills of midwives across Tanzania.

On the evening of March 14th, 2025, at Kishapu District Hospital, Shinyanga Region, 33-year-old Kugia Kuhenga Masali, a mother of 5, arrived in active labour. What made this birth extraordinary? A breech presentation with a big baby weighing 4kg!

Two weeks earlier, her scan had confirmed the breech position — and this brave mother arrived fully aware of the challenge ahead. Her vitals were stable, the fetal heart was strong, and labour was progressing fast.

As the doctor and theatre team were on their way, her waters broke with meconium-stained liquor. And it was at this critical moment that Midwife Dinah Shija Nkwabi stepped in with calm, skill, and heart.

💪🏽 A proud participant of the MEST (Midwifery Emergency Skills Training) in Shinyanga, February 2025, Dinah quickly applied her training, prepared for the second stage of labour, ensured resuscitation equipment was ready, and confidently guided the mother through a challenging breech birth.

With expert use of the Loveset manoeuvre, she safely delivered the baby’s legs, trunk, and finally the head — just as the theatre team arrived.

A healthy baby boy was born with an Apgar score of 7 and then 10, weighing a proud 4kg! His first cry was a victory for skilled, compassionate midwifery care.

Let’s show Midwife Dinah some love! Drop a message or emoji in the comments to celebrate her courage, skill, and dedication. 💙👏🏽 !

🌸 EVERY STORY DESERVES TO BE HEARD. EVERY MIDWIFE DESERVES TO BE SEEN. 🌸

At TAMA, we believe in the power of stories told by those who live them. In partnership with .impact and , we spent this past Thursday gathering powerful stories from midwives in Dar es Salaam — capturing their real, raw, and inspiring experiences from the frontlines of care.

🎥 These stories will help shape a forthcoming animation grounded in human-centred storytelling, exploring the gap between public perception and the lived realities of midwives in Tanzania.

A heartfelt thank you to .impact for beautifully coordinating this important exercise, and to the incredible midwives who opened their hearts to us. You are the voice of change, and your courage is the beginning of a narrative that will inform, challenge, and inspire.

📢 TO ALL MIDWIVES ACROSS TANZANIA:
Your story matters. Stay connected with us as we continue this journey across the country. When your moment comes, raise your voice — because together, we’re changing the story.

Meet Ahmad Mustapha Keya — A Midwife on a Mission 👨‍⚕️

From volunteering at Songea Regional Hospital in 2019 to managing life-threatening obstetric emergencies in some of Tanzania’s busiest maternity wards — "I’ve dedicated my career to saving lives and ensuring mothers and newborns go home safely" says Midwife Ahmad

🌸 Over 300 deliveries conducted.
🌸 Zero maternal deaths.
🌸 Countless emergencies like PPH, eclampsia, and birth asphyxia successfully managed through skill, dedication, and heart.

From Songea ➡️ Dar es Salaam’s Walter Hospital ➡️ Chamazi Dispensary ➡️ Mbagala Rangi Tatu Maternity (handling 1500 deliveries per month!) ➡️ and now proudly serving at Kambarage Health Centre, Shinyanga Municipal Council.

I believe every pregnant woman deserves a safe delivery and a healthy baby. And through competence, compassion, and strict adherence to standards, I make that possible — one mother, one baby at a time.

🛑 Every Girl Deserves a Future of Her Choice! 🛑

The has just released a bold new guideline to tackle one of the leading threats to girls’ health worldwide — adolescent pregnancy.

💔 21 million girls in low and middle-income countries become pregnant every year. Many are denied education, safety, and opportunities because of child marriage, gender inequality, and lack of access to reproductive health services.

At TAMA, we believe in protecting, educating, and empowering our girls. Together, we can:
✅ End child marriage
✅ Keep girls in school
✅ Improve access to youth-friendly reproductive health services
✅ Deliver comprehensive sexuality education

"Early pregnancies are not just a health issue — they’re a reflection of inequality.”

Let’s be the generation that stands up for girls’ rights and choices. 🌸💪
