Dengue fever have been reported in Dar es Salaam. For precautions, MTL Consulting wishes to
bring to your attention the following necessary information regarding dengue fever.
Transmission
Dengue fever is a disease caused by a virus transmitted to humans by mosquito (Aedes
aegypti)
Patients with dengue fever can pass on the infection through mosquito bites.
Physical contact or closeness to a sick person does not transmit dengue fever.
Common symptoms
The symptoms of dengue fever resemble those of malaria (except for the rash). The symptoms
include:
Sudden onset of severe headache (typically behind the eyes);
High grade fever;
Muscle and joint pains;
Nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and Diarrhoea;
Skin rash, which appears three to four days after the onset of fever;
Mild bleeding (e.g. nosebleed, bleeding gums or easy bruising, small blood spots under the
skin);
In severe cases, dengue fever may lead to profuse bleeding, shock, and even death.
Protection
Avoid being bitten by mosquitoes
Sleep in rooms that are properly screened with gauze over the windows and doors.
Use a mosquito bed net around your bed, impregnated with an insecticide.
Use mosquito repellent cream.
Spray the room with an insecticide.
Use long-sleeved clothing.
Eliminate the vector
Destroy breeding places of mosquito by clearing surroundings.
Make proper disposal of empty bottles, containers, cans, etc.
Clean the surrounding (e.g. grass, bush, stagnant water, etc.)
Precaution
If you develop any of the symptoms above, report immediately at the centre or nearby
hospital.
Use Paracetamol and drink plenty of fluid.
Avoid use of Aspirin, Diclofenac and Ibobrufen; they may cause internal bleeding.
