A forest beekeeper can climb up to 50 feet up a tree to lower down the hive to retrieve the honey. That’s a long way down!

The Amber variety has a full and fruity flavor. When the rains start in October and November the Malagarasi river picks up stream and the first forest flowers of the season begin to bloom. When this honey is harvested in December and January, the river is in full flow. Our beekeepers use push bikes to navigate the forest paths to harvest this wild honey.

A recent study published by the University of Colorado Boulder found that when women are involved in land management, the environment benefits. The study consisted of forest users in Tanzania, Peru and Indonesia split into two groups–one with a gender quota of 50% women and one with no gender quota. The study revealed that groups with a 50% female quota made better decisions for protecting the forest.

When more women are involved in group decisions about land management, the group conserves more - particularly when offered financial incentives to do so, according to a new study.

William Binigie, 59, has been beekeeping ever since he was 14 years old. Beekeeping started off as a hobby for William but he soon realized its economic potential and it is now the primary source of income for him and his family. William is hopeful of making a profitable living off his honey sales and sending all of his children to school so they can carry on the family business.

Beekeepers smoke the beehive to protect themselves from bees while they harvest honey. The smoke temporarily hinders bees senses, which prompts them to evacuate the hive, and allows the beekeeper to collect the honey without harming the bees.
