On September 26, 2025, a dissemination meeting was held in Kahe Village to share findings from a study on the Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) of traditional healers regarding breast cancer treatment.
The meeting brought together participants including Prof. Blandina Mmbaga (KCRI Director), Dr. Mwita (District Medical Officer), local leaders, and traditional healers from Kilimanjaro, mostly from Kahe.
Prof. Blandina thanked the healers for their partnership and emphasized the importance of early referral in improving breast cancer survival.

Since the collaboration began, 65 suspected cancer patients have been referred for care, and six traditional healers have been trained as ambassadors to raise awareness and promote timely referrals.
The event, chaired by Ms. Elizabeth Msoka (NORA PhD trainee), highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between healers, healthcare providers, and community leaders to enhance early detection and awareness.

25–26 September 2025, the CTCL Project Kick-Off Meeting:
This study focuses on Tanzanian patients living with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), a rare type of skin cancer. By comparing 18 patients with 18 healthy volunteers, researchers are exploring how differences in skin microbes may be linked to disease severity, immune system function, and patient recovery. Using advanced tools such as genome sequencing and tissue analysis, the team hopes to generate new insights that could guide better care and treatment for CTCL patients in the future.
Alongside the research, the project is also supporting PhD students from the Regional Dermatology Training Center Tanzania helping to build local expertise and strengthen research capacity.
The project was officially launched with an overview of the Good Samaritan Foundation (GSF) presented by the Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute - KCRI Director. In her remarks, she assured funders of the institute’s strong commitment to implementing the project, mentoring trainees within the network, strengthening collaborations, ensuring delivery of results, and building long-term capacity.
The CTCL project is proudly supported by the LEO Foundation Skin Immunology Research Center (SIC)

From the study it was depicted that in Moshi, alcohol use is seen as both a source of harm and social connection. While it fosters unity and traditions, it also drives stigma, conflict, economic strain, health risks, and violence. These insights highlight the need for policies and programs that address alcohol’s social, financial, and health impacts holistically.
