It has more than 200 street children (Tuleane, 2008). Presence of street children in Mwanza is the result of losing one or both parents due to HIVAIDS pandemic and poor economic conditions. Sometimes these children end up on the streets because their parents have abandoned them or their families have sent them to the streets to earn money. The street is their home and they consider the other stree
t children sometimes as their family. The children live in groups and seek their livelihood from small jobs or through stealing. Fighting and begging for food is very common. They sleep on the street without any protection and are often chased away by the police. Street children are facing physical violence and sexual abuse. The risk to be infected with HIV AIDS and other diseases is great. They don’t have money to consult a doctor or buy medications. Their self-esteem is completely gone. Because of these miserable circumstances several of the street children grow up in the street and then engage in illicit activities like robbery and prostitutions. That is why Mwanza in now becoming one the cities with many thieves. Basing on the above fact, this project proposal is developed after seeing that there is a gap of not having institutions that would collect these children and help them to acquire some life skills and hence become productive in the community.
