The PEG10 protein originated from the retrotransposon, but has long been "domesticated": it has become entrenched in the mammalian genome and has even begun to perform various beneficial functions. However, PEG10 retains some features that indicate its origin. In particular, it forms capsid-like particles of spherical shape (the left image is obtained using a transmission electron microscope and shows the surface of such a particle, the right image is obtained by cryoelectron microscopy and shows the particle "on the lumen").At the time of the former activity, these capsid-like particles were used to protect the viral RNA read from it and serving as a template for jumping to another location, from cellular enzymes and other adverse factors.
