Transcendental Meditation is a neo-Hindu new religious movement founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, named after the meditation technique he created with the utterance of a personal mantra.
Recent independent systematic reviews have found that the practice of TM has no advantage over other relaxation and recreational methods used in health care.
The TM technique is one of the most widely used and extensively studied meditation practices in the world. Widely used as a technique to "reduce stress" and "unleash the full potential of the mind." It is taught by specially trained instructors.
In recent years, the TM technique as a method of reducing stress and improving academic performance has been used in some public and private schools in the United States, Latin America, and India.
In 1971, the Maharishi University of Management was founded in Iowa, which in the United States is accredited by the Higher Commission on Education.[14] and in which transcendental meditation is used as part of the educational process. In 1994, John Hagelin of the Maharishi University of Management and the Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy was awarded the Ig Nobel Prize for his experimental proof that 4,000 people trained in a special form of meditation caused an 18 percent reduction in violent crime in Washington, D.C. peace.
Transcendental Meditation is used in selected schools in Canada, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Israel, Spain, Lebanon, Thailand, China, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and other African countries. In 2011, the UK Ministry of Education awarded the status of "Free School" to the Maharishi School with full state funding for the activities of the school.
