The Dnipro River by the city of Dnipro — perhaps, the best tautology that could occur in Ukraine 💙

With around 1 million citizens, Dnipro is the third city in the country by population. It is many-sided — here you can find fantastic riverfronts, spacious parks, business centers, educational institutions, industrial enterprises 🏙

Fun facts:
🔹 Dnipro has the longest riverside embankment in Europe — 23 km
🔹 the highest buildings (you can see them in the photo) are Dnipro Towers — 123 m
🔹 Dnipro is one of the most important industrial centers in Ukraine (heavy industry, aerospace, metallurgy)
🔹 locals and tourists love trying extreme water activities here
🔹 Dnipro has a beautiful Monastery island where you can hide from the vibrant city life

The list is not complete, of course! Some space should be left for own discoveries as well 🙃

Saviour-Transfiguration Cathedral
Soborna Square, 1

The Saviour-Transfiguration Cathedral is the main temple of Dnipro Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. It was built in 1835.

From the Transfiguration Cathedral Katerynoslav began its building. On 13 October 1786 Catherine II officially approved the first general building plan of Katerynoslav. The city center is designed on a large flat hilltop, near the bend of the Dnieper River. The architect proposed to locate here a large city square with the Transfiguration Cathedral with the main administrative and public buildings. The future cathedral was supposed to be an architectural dominant of the new Katerynoslav.

Claude Gerua was the author of the first project of the Transfiguration Cathedral, which was an ambitious five-aisled basilica. This project was approved in 1786, but was not implemented.

Construction of the Saviour- Transfiguration Cathedral began in 1787. And only after 48 years, in 1835, one of the most outstanding architectural monuments of the Russian Empire was finally completed.

After the October Revolution of 1917, the Transfiguration Cathedral wanted to be destroyed. And only because of Dmytro Ivanovich Yavornytsky the cathedral was preserved. Under the guise of a museum piece, the unique iconostasis of the cathedral remained in one’s place, although outside the building had already lost its former beauty. There was made an order to dismantle domes and spire of the bell tower, as ideologically harmful objects for the people. Believers miraculously had time to dig only a four-hundred-pound bell behind the church fence.

Under the guise of the museum, the Transfiguration Cathedral survived the Great Patriotic War. In 1941, at the approval according of the German authorities, divine services were resumed for a while. But it was only a moment of grace before the post-war vandalism.

In the fence of the Transfiguration Cathedral almost everything that was inside was burned on large fires - icons, utensils. And most importantly, the most unique iconostasis was burned. At the same time disappears an information on a large four-hundred-foot bell. The cathedral itself was turned into a paper warehouse of the publishing house "Zorya". From 1930 to 1988, the divine service in the Saviour-Transfiguration Cathedral was not conducted.

From 1975 to 1988 there was a museum of religion and atheism in the building of the Transfiguration Cathedral.

The first divine service was held in 1989 before its official transfer to the Orthodox at the insistence of the staff members of the History Museum.

On 21 January, 1992 the Saviour-Transfiguration Cathedral was officially handed over to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Work has begun on the restoration of its historical primordiality.

On the territory of the cathedral there is a burial place of diocesan bishops and clergymen: Archbishop Andrei (Komarov), Archbishop Varlaam (Ilyushchenko), Bishop Kronid (Mishchenko), Protopriest Vladimir Kapustiansky, Archpriest Konstantin Ogienko, Fyodor Duplenko, Andrei Kirpichnikov.

🏆Dnipro is a Winner in Landscape Lighting 🏆
The boulevard is being built downtown, closely to theaters and art sites, and is set to become a new creative cluster.
The dominant supports made of corten steel will give the "scenic" narrow-beam light. Crafted perforated lamps will be spread over the entire boulevard on carrier cables. For them, we are creating special lenses that will give good caustic waves to the pedestrian plane. With the help of gobo projectors, we will complement the atmosphere with light projections reflecting the creative professions.
And every passer-by will be literally able to feel himself or herself a creator thanks to our interactive media screen. With the help of projection technologies, anyone will get a chance to create paintings or sculptures on a large surface, or to be an orchestra conductor.

A city of bridges 🌊

The first and the oldest one — an Amursky Bridge.
Before the foundation of Yekaterinoslav, a famous Cossack ferry functioned in this part of the river. It helped the inhabitants of the Left-Bank Ukraine, who were traveling to the Sich and to more southern regions. The idea of building a bridge was realized only with the construction of the Catherine (now Pridneprovskaya) railway in 1881-1884. In 1889, at the World's Fair in Paris, the bridge was awarded a gold medal, as was the Eiffel Tower in Paris. After World War II, the bridge had to be rebuilt from scratch.

Centralny (Novy) Bridge is a key bridge over river Dnipro in the city of Dnipro, Ukraine connecting right and left banks of Dnipro and is a continuation of Slobozhanskyi prospekt that stretches over to the Dnipro city centre. Built in 1966, the bridge was originally named as the 50th Anniversary of the Great October. This bridge has long been the longest in Ukraine.

The longest and the newest one — Kaidatsky Bridge.
The bridge is named after an old Zaporizhian Cossack settlement, Novi Kodaky (Kaidaky). Opened November 10, 1982; became the fourth bridge across the Dnieper in the Dnieper. It has 6 lanes for traffic in both directions, in 1996 a tram was launched on the bridge. The bridge stretches over an island Namystanka. The island is part of Sukhachivka arboretum (also known as Diyivka Park) and administered by the Dnipro State Forestry.

The most unique one — Merefa-Kherson bridge.
Single track railway bridge crossing the Dnieper in Dnipro and part of the railway line between cities of Merefa and Kherson. Plans were completed during the empire period for a rail bridge over the river in the city known, at that time as Ekaterinoslav in order to carry the railway line connecting Merefa in the northeast with Kherson on the Black Sea coast.
Work started in 1912, using plans drawn up by the bridge engineer Grigory Perederiy bu the final cubic meter of concrete was poured on 24 October 1932. At the time of construction - the largest arch bridge in Europe. It is included in the register of architectural monuments of Ukraine as a unique engineering structure.

TOP places to visit in Dnipro🤩

The first association with Dnipro, that it is an industrial city. That is true, but there is another side of the city on the Dnieper River – there are beautiful parks, modern avenues and boulevards, a large number of different museums and theaters. It is a rhythmic city that keeps up with the times. So that to better understand it, we do recommend visiting the most interesting places:

Number 1🤩

The world's largest Jewish center «Menorah»

The world’s largest Jewish multifunctional center Menorah has opened its doors in 2012. The cultural-business center is a majestic building of seven towers, which symbolize the image of the temple’s menorahs-symbol of the State of Israel. The complex occupies the area of more than 50 000 sq.m. The buildings of the center consist of two 7-storey towers, then there are two 12-storey towers, followed by 17-storey towers, and the 22-storey tower, whose height is 77 meters, completes the exposition.
Evening Menorah enchants with its amazing luminescence, when hundreds of lanterns light up on its roof. The walls of this huge Jewish complex are faced with a Jerusalem stone, which has no parallel. It was specially made for Menorah, after which the production line was disassembled, so the stone can not be recreated.

The chief architect of the Menorah center O. Sorin united the complex into a single "Golden Rose" synagogue, in the center of the building there is the third largest memorial complex in the world - the Museum "Memory of The Jewish People and The Holocaust In Ukraine".
It is located on three floors of the “Menorah” center and consists of four main halls. The total area of the exposition is 3 thousand square metres.
The first hall of the Museum is devoted to the traditions of Judaism and the peculiarities of the life of the Jews. The largest hall of the Museum is dedicated to the Holocaust, this exposition occupies more than 800 square metres. There is also a Hall of Memory - the Hall of Names. Outside the Museum guests can see the installation "Rift of the World", resembling the catastrophe of civilization after Nazis’ coming to power.

A distinctive feature of the Museum "Memory of The Jewish People and The Holocaust In Ukraine" is that in expositions, besides traditional showcases with exhibits, are used multimedia installations, holograms, video and audio brodcast. Also in the Museum there are temporary exposition halls, information center, library, training rooms, etc.
In Menorah there is a 4-star hotel MENORAH HOTEL, Menorah Grand Palace restaurant with the largest in all Ukraine banquet hall for celebrations (designed for 1700 seats), hostel, galleries and other places worth visiting.
Near Menorah there is the Choral Synagogue "Golden Rose" and the Jewish quarter, which consists of the reconstructed 12 facades of buildings: schools, apartment houses, mazi-bakeries, houses of worship.
Regular tours take place in the Menorah center and its neighborhood.

Despite the closed borders there are still a large number of foreigners in Ukraine. "What are they doing ?" -you will ask. Some continue to study or work and some continue to discover Ukraine. This is exactly what Simon of Cardiff, Wales, is like.

The embankment walk

Dnipro embankment is the longest in Europe, Its length is 23 km. It consists of three consistent embankments: Peremohy, Sicheslavska and Zavodska. Back in the days of Katerynoslav, the existence of the river itself had only to be guessed since the whole territory was filled with warehouses, cargo and piles of commercial timber, because of which Dnieper was not even visible and was
only used as the transport artery. Embankment’s arrangement started in the 50s of the last century.

Central Bridge
The Сentral Bridge is an automobile bridge, opened in 1966. It is the main transport artery between the left and right banks of the city. Its official name is the "Bridge of the 50th Anniversary of the Great October Revolution"
The more famous names are "New" or "Central".
Currently, the bridge is under reconstruction: major repairs are being carried out, bicycle paths are added, so it is closed for cars and trucks, it can only be passed through by shuttle bus.

Old Bridge
On the 18th of May 1884 in Katerynoslav, the technical wonder of the world, the Amur (Old) Bridge was opened. The project of the bridge has received an award in Paris on the International Exposition. In fact, it was the beginning of Russian bridge building industry. The bridge was built in 1884 and for the next 100 years, similar bridges were built on all the rivers. The reason is that the project of the bridge was cheap enough and easy to
implement. The emperor of the Russian Empire, Alexander III, even specifically came in Katerynoslav to look at it. From the very beginning, the Old Bridge was a two-tier structure for railway traffic, road transport and pedestrians.
During the war, the bridge was heavily damaged and rebuilt afterwards: only the supports, in fact, remained from the old bridge. With the second birth, an adjustable span also appeared at the bridge (under the superstructure of the upper deck). In 1977, alongside the bridge appeared its single-tier stand-in.

Restaurant “Poplavok”
Sicheslavska Naberezha Street, 7
Poplavok was built in 1968. It’s an amazing architectural structure in the form of a flying saucer on the water.
It still remains an architectural highlight of the embankment and the city of Dnipro city, where the space topic has actively manifested itself.

“Sphere” Fountain
Sicheslavska Naberezhna Street, 19d
In hot weather, the fountain is the best salvation from the sun. Due to its unique shape you can take pictures from all the different angles. In the evening, “Sphere” lights up with a soft yellow light, along with a beautiful view on the Dnieper, framed with two bridges - the Old and the New. We recommend to rest near the biggest «dandelion» in Dnipro.

John the Baptist Church
Sicheslavska Naberezhna Street, 27d
The church is crowned by a large bronze sculpture of John the Baptist - this is the largest statue on the territory of the whole CIS, with a pedestal it forms 7,5 meters, made in the form of a Greek cross, from a bird's eye view it resembles a crystal of a snowflake. The belfry of the church consists of 16 bells, the modern belfry is equipped with computer control. In the lower part there is a baptistery - adults and children can be baptized right in the waters of the Dnieper (the main uniqueness of the temple). John the Baptist Church is one of the most beautiful monuments of the religious architecture of the Dnipro.

“Youth of the Dnieper”
The idea of sculpture was to show the majestic and noble figures of Ukrainian girls. Particularly inspirational for the sculptor was the national holiday of Ivan Kupala, when the girls traditionally set wreaths on the water. That is why in his work young women are depicted in a boat, in Ukrainian shirts and with wreaths. The sculpture is casted in bronze, its total weight is three and a half tons.

Circus
Sicheslavska Naberezhna Street, 33
Dnipro Circus has a long and interesting history. It was founded at the end of the ХІХ century in Katerynoslav (now Dnipro), and was then called Katerynoslavskyi Circus, it worked until 1929.
Since 1932, a shapito circus, destroyed during the Second World War, has functioned.
Since 1959, there has been a stationary circus, since 1980 the circus moved to the present Sicheslavska embankment.
In Dnipro Circus outstanding figures of circus art: M. Rumiantsev, N. Kapytanova, Yu. Kuklachev, Y. Kyo, Yu. Nykulyn, V. Zapashny, representatives of the Durov dynasty were performing.
The Dnipro State Circus is famous for its unique building, which has no parallel in the whole world. For the first time in domestic practice, during the construction of the Dnipro Circus, a hipped roof was used from prefabricated reinforced concrete elements.
Premises for animals were thought over and organized - stables, aviaries, heterogeneous cells and much more.

«Swan» Fountain
Sicheslavska Naberezhna Street, 33, across from the hotel “Dnipropetrovsk”
It is a floating fountain that was set on the embankment in 2005. The height of the central jet reaches 50 meters, the effect of wingspan of the swan is achieved due to the movement of the side jets.
Near the "White Swan" there are two rows of small fountains, coming out of the ground, it is a favorite entertainment for children.
On green lawns you can lie down, meditate, practice yoga. For lovers of comfort in the warm time there are soft armchairs on the grass, where everyone can come and relax with their food and drinks.

Family bench
The «Family bench» was opened under the framework of a large-scale national project of the «Kyivstar» company, its length is 50 meters.
The construction is decorated with seven installations that reflect the family’s way of life: the moment of meeting of two hearts, falling in love, the decision to be together, the appearance of children, care and peace, and the main thing that connects the members of each family is communication.
«Family bench» is registered in the Book of Records of Ukraine.
The length of the bench is 50 metres, more than 1 kilometer of the iron rod was used to create an openwork pattern. On the "Family bench" even the largest family can comfortably accommodate, consisting of several generations.

Towers
On the opposite side of the embankment there is the residential complex "Towers", it consists of two twin buildings. The height of the buildings from the ground level to the roof ridge is 106 m. At the time of construction of the complex in 2003, it was the tallest building in Ukraine. In 2006, the complex received the prize of the National Union of Architects of Ukraine. And a year later, the 30-story twin towers received the state award of Ukraine in the field of architecture. Now the complex is considered one of the attractions and symbols of Dnipro.

Wish-ball
On the Festival dock there is the "Wish-Ball", crowning the concrete pyramid. It is said that if to rub the side of this ball and make the most secret wish, it will come true.

Monastery Island and Shevchenko Park
The Monastery Island can be reached only through the only pedestrian bridge in the city. It has a view of the Merefo-Kherson Bridge- it is a unique structure which was the first bridge in the world to be built using reinforced concrete. Furthermore, it is the biggest arched bridge in Europe. Its curved shape has always attracted people and has given a rise to a lot of rumours and legends. People are still talking that during the Great Patriotic War German bombers could not reach the bridge due to its unusual shape.
