Top 5 Most Injurious Sports
We have compiled a ranking of sports in which you need to be extra careful.
Every sport has its risks, but some sports break records in the number and frequency of injuries. This does not make them any worse than others, but they do require you to be more responsible.
Thus, we present to you the 5 sports which require extreme caution.
1. Cycling .
Not many people expect to see this sport at the top of the list, but cycling is recognized as more dangerous than soccer, especially when it comes to head injuries. In 2000 alone, about $8 billion was spent in the U.S. to treat injuries from bicycling accidents.
You might think that when we talk about injuries we are referring to extreme cycling, but the main cause of injury is "other vehicle," i.e., collisions on the street. Of course, bicycle racing is no less dangerous than riding in the city, because cyclists ride very close to each other, and if one of them falls, then all of them fall, which is fraught with many injuries at once for many athletes.
Injuries to cyclists range from minor (abrasions after a fall) to very serious (severe head injuries, fractures). Some athletes-mostly professionals and avid amateurs-suffer from chronic injuries: tendonitis, muscle and joint pain, lumbar spine problems, and neck pain.
How can you prevent skating injuries? Here are a few tips:
Choose a bicycle to suit you. Usually the models indicate the height and weight they are designed for. If you do not know, ask for advice. Do not buy a model that does not fit you! Ride such a bike will be difficult, you have reduced maneuverability, which can discomfort and falls.
Buy special clothes. Do not do cycling in a plain cotton T-shirt - cotton prevents the evaporation of sweat, which is released in huge quantities when cycling, especially in the summer. Cycling jerseys are made from micro polyester, a lightweight synthetic material that wicks moisture away from the body very well, accelerating its evaporation. Cotton, on the other hand, will quickly become soggy and heavy, putting extra strain on you and not allowing your body to breathe. Why go through the hassle? Shorts, too, are made of micro-polyester and have a special design that will save you from the discomfort in the groin area, which is difficult to avoid if you ride for several hours sitting on a narrow seat.
Wear a helmet. This is a must-have protection for the cyclist, no matter where you ride. It doesn't guarantee 100% safety, but it minimizes the risk of serious head injuries that cyclists without a helmet suffer most often.
Don't listen to music on your headphones when you ride your bicycle! If you can't bear to part with your player, listen with one ear and not too loudly. It is much more important to hear another cyclist, pedestrian or car approaching on the road.
Be sure to use lights and reflectors - so you can ride safely at night;
