Red Book of Ukraine
The Red Data Book of Ukraine is intended to summarize information on the current position of endangered taxa. Based on the information provided, measures are being developed aimed at the protection, reproduction and rational use of these species.
Before the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine did not have its own Red Book. The document was called "The Red Book of the Ukrainian SSR". After the law on the Red Book was adopted by the Ukrainian government in 1994, the first volume was published, which became an official document. It told about endangered species, the range of which implies being on the territory of Ukraine.

The current edition was released in 2009. At the moment, more than 550 representatives of the fauna have been identified and about 830 plant species, which will soon disappear. All protected taxa underwent clustering, dividing into 5 classes. They are divided into vulnerable, endangered, insufficiently known, unappreciated and rare types. Belonging to a certain class depends on the stage of the threat and the measures taken.

Lynx
The lynx also fell victim to the fashion industry. These perfect and graceful animals were hunted for fur for a long time. Now these predatory cats are rare in Ukraine: in the Carpathians there are about 350-400 individuals, and on the territory of Polesie - up to 80-90.

Eared hedgehog

These cute hedgehogs have the status of endangered ones, and if you meet them, consider yourself lucky. Experts suggest that there are only a few dozen of them on the territory of Ukraine.
Over the past 20 years, eared hedgehogs have been seen only once in the wild - in the vicinity of Luhansk. This species is rapidly disappearing due to the degradation of the steppe ecosystems in which it lives.

European mink (Mustela lutreola)

Approximately only 200-300 individuals of European mink live in Ukraine. In the Zhytomyr region, the number of the species has decreased by four times over the past 50 years. If in 1987 60 minks lived in the lower reaches of the Dniester, by 2000 there were only 10.

Reasons for population decline: intensive changes in wetlands in the process of agricultural and recreational use.
The species is protected in the Danube and Carpathian Biosphere Reserves, in the Lower Dniester National Natural Park and the Kanev State Reserve

Brown bear (Ursus arctos)

The conservation status of this species in the Red Data Book is disappearing: the number of brown bears in Ukraine does not exceed 300 individuals. About 200 clubfoot live in the Transcarpathian and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, about 50 more - in Lvov and 20 - in Chernivtsi.
The reasons for the decrease in the number: intensive exploitation and rejuvenation of forests, a large recreational load on them, poaching of animals.

Taxonomic affiliation: Class - Mammals (Mammalia), row - Artiodactyla (Artiodactyla), Bovidae family. One of 2 species of the genus, one species in the fauna of Ukraine.

Conservation status of the species: Lost in nature.

The range of the species and its distribution in Ukraine: The historical range of the species from the Pyrenees to the West. Siberia, England and South. Scandinavia. In Ukraine, at the beginning of the 1990s, there were 10 populations in the Volyn, Kiev, Chernigov, Sumy, Lvov, Ivano-Frankovsk, Chernivtsi and Vinnitsa regions. Now the bison is preserved everywhere, except for the Chernihiv region.

The number and reasons for its change The species, the number of which in all countries except Ukraine, is growing from year to year. From 1965 to 1967, 41 individuals were imported into Ukraine. The maximum number in 1990 was 685 heads. In 2008, the livestock decreased by more than three times and now amounts to less than 200 bison.

Reasons for population change: Poaching and careless hunting.

Features of biology and scientific significance: Traditionally, the species, carried out huge migrations, now leads a sedentary lifestyle. It is kept in small families or herds (up to 50 individuals). Old males live alone, stick to the group only during the rut. It feeds on grass, leaves, shoots and branches of trees and shrubs, bark, and also eats hay well. The male reaches sexual maturity at the age of 2-3 years, and the female at the age of 2. Rut in August-September. Once a year after 9 months of pregnancy, the female gives birth to one, rarely two babies. Lactation lasts 8-10 months. Plain and mountain forests (mainly deciduous and mixed, with clearings, meadows and swamps). Goes to hayfields and other agricultural land.

Morphological signs: Huge bull. Body length is more than 3 m, at the shoulders up to two meters, weight up to 1 ton. Hair is dark brown. The head is lowered, with a pronounced "beard" and two relatively small horns.
