Ingrown hairs form when sharp, freshly shaved hairs pierce nearby skin and grow into it. The skin then reacts to this hair and becomes red, inflamed, itchy as a result. Often women experience burning and itching after shaving, this mainly happens when the razor removes the top layer of the skin, allowing bacteria to actively multiply on the inflamed skin.
