Vegetation is diverse and quite rich in species (about 12 thousand species of higher plants, two thirds of them - endemic). The northern (greater) part of the Mexican Highlands is dominated by semi-deserts and deserts with a peculiar xerophilous flora, as well as mimosa shrubs. Vegetation of the southern part of the plateau and the coastal lowlands that frame it, mainly savannah, consisting of grass cover and thickets of thorny shrubs. Deciduous and mixed forests (oak, hornbeam, linden, pine, fir and others) predominate in the mountains bordering the highlands. In the southern and southeastern part of Mexico grow mostly tropical forests, on the eastern slopes - moist evergreens, on the western - dry, mostly coniferous, at the foot of the mountains - deciduous.
