Mykola Pavlovych Sirenko was born in the village of Lityachi, Ternopil region, in 1958. He completed 8 grades at a local school. He has no further education and did not serve in the army. He worked on collective farms, animal farms, hoeing and harvesting vegetables, and grazing livestock. From time to time, he took on extra work. He got married and had a son. They lived as a family in his mother-in-law's house. His life changed forever on 7 January 1992, when his wife and son were killed in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. Mykola was working in the Dnipropetrovsk region at the time. He arrived just in time for the funeral. After the tragedy, he started drinking. From 1993 to 1996, he was in prison for hooliganism. When he returned to his native village, he found that the village council had taken his house. Since then, he has worked in various cities in the fields and rented accommodation. His friends invited him to the spiritual centre ‘Vidrodzhennia’ (Renaissance). He came to Kyiv in 2011 to study at their ‘college’.
After that, he was a leader in rehabilitation centres, but because he himself abused substances, he periodically found himself either as a client or as a leader. Until he ended up on the street. He spent some time wandering around monasteries. And in the end, due to his age, health problems, and the cold, he ended up at the HOM social centre. We are currently treating Mykola for pneumonia and plan to arrange for him to be admitted to a state nursing home.

On November 11, we commemorate St. Martin of Tours, the first Christian chaplain who gave half of his cloak (cappa) to a freezing homeless man. The HOM residents visited a local church, where they made trench candles for our defenders. For the third consecutive year, we have been producing thousands of candles and sending them to our friends in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This is our modest but valuable contribution to victory.

There were a dozen calls about Georgiy, a homeless man. He is 65 years old and has only one leg. A few weeks ago, he settled in the bushes at the intersection of Protasiv Yar and Novovokzalna streets.
The social worker asked the women who were asking him to go to the social centre to do a short interview with him. Simple questions, including: does he want to go to the shelter; does he agree with the rules of stay; can he get to the dining room and toilet on his own?
According to the kind women, Georgiy agreed; he is a bright person with no bad habits, etc...
Today, when we came to pick him up, Georgiy categorically refused to go anywhere. The formal reason was that he was unable to go without ci******es and alcohol; the more realistic reason was that he was happy with his situation and did not want any changes.
Georgiy does not care that it will soon be freezing and he will die. Caring people are running around and worrying about him, bringing him food and drink. We spent three hours in traffic jams because of him. Before that, there was an ambulance and the police.
It's a shame. We wished him all the best and drove back.

As you know, in partnership with Ukraine for Christ, we equipped a small house from a shipping container over the summer. It is designed to accommodate three people. How are things going now? The cabin still needs a little work, but it is already quite suitable for living in. Our wards are already living there. We are very happy and sincerely grateful to everyone involved in this good initiative!

Volodymyr Kalchenko was born in Kyiv in 1956. He graduated from school No. 136, completing nine grades. He has no further education and did not serve in the army. His father died when he was 13 years old. He had a criminal record and a prison sentence for theft in a Siberian colony.
He worked at the Arsenal factory, then as a crane operator at the port, and also as an electrical engineer, servicing lifts. He has been married twice. He has a daughter who lives in Kyiv, with whom he maintains contact. When asked if his daughter knows about his condition and why she does not help him, he replies: “She has a one-room apartment, how can she help?” He also has a younger brother, but they do not communicate. We know that his nephew lives in his parents' apartment. Vladimir came to us thanks to the sisters from a Catholic convent, where he had been staying for a long time. The Sisters of St. Teresa helped him restore his documents and pension.
In communication, Volodymyr is proud, withdrawn, and reacts quite emotionally to uncomfortable questions. At 69 years old, only God can change his attitude towards life. We hope that in the open and friendly atmosphere of the HOM social center, he will feel better.
Once again, we are convinced that the main reason why elderly people end up on the street is because of broken relationships with their children.
We plan to register Vladimir for permanent residence in a state nursing home.

Dmytro Kravchuk was born in 1967, raised, and lived his life in the Kherson region. Completed ten years of school, then served in the army, then graduated from vocational school No. 1, specializing in crane operation. Worked at a factory in his field. Married, has two children. His wife died of illness in 2007. The ordinary life of an ordinary Ukrainian continued until January 17, 2023, when a shell hit his home during another bombing of the village of Veletenske. He was wounded in the spine. Thanks to volunteers, he was evacuated to Kyiv. For a long time, Dmytro wandered from hospital to hospital and rehabilitation center to rehabilitation center. He was able to walk again, but with difficulty, on crutches. His daughters, aged 33 and 34, moved abroad. They communicate rarely, and, as Dmytro says, “reluctantly.” Recently, he lived in a hostel run by a charitable foundation, where he wove nets for the military. Unfortunately, due to financial difficulties, the hostel closed and Dmytro found himself on the street. As of today, Dmytro is our client. He plans to register for permanent residence at a retirement home for veterans of labor.

Valentina Bilyk (Trushkivska) was born in 1951, from Kyiv. She graduated from school No. 16. She worked at a champagne factory as an assistant. She got married and had one daughter. After her divorce, she lived with her younger sister in her parents' apartment. More than 10 years ago, her sister kicked her out of the apartment. She lost her Soviet-era passport. For some time, she lived with people, helping with physical work around the house. When she could no longer work, she ended up on the street. A volunteer found her, called an ambulance, and paid for her treatment for a while. The doctors contacted her daughter, who brought Valentina to us for temporary accommodation until the necessary documents could be processed. Upon closer communication with Valentina, it became clear that she has mental disorders and had been in Pavlov's hospital for the last year. Therefore, she can stay with us for up to 1 month while we search for a suitable facility.

Evening socializing at the community center. Due to the moscowite attack, there is no electricity, the area is destroyed, and there are casualties. Therefore, the mood is not ideal. However, two charming women who serve the homeless came to visit. It became brighter. Olga and Zhanna brought a cake, so we are ending this difficult day in a friendly atmosphere.

Valery Chernyshov, born in 1966. From Kyiv. Studied at the Pedagogical University (Dragomanov). Worked most of his life as a tour guide at the Kyiv Fortress Museum. He did not serve in the military due to his health (he has poor eyesight). He is married; they got together when they were already older (both were over 50). They have no children. His wife works in England, she left before the war.
He took care of his paralyzed father; they lived in a “Khrushchevka” in Svyatoshino. After his father's death (2016), he went to work in Erefia (Kazan). Taking advantage of his absence, his uncle drew up a gift agreement (as if from Valery) for his son. He returned, and strangers were living in his apartment. There were court cases, but he was unable to regain possession of his home. Since 2018, Valery had been living rent-free with an elderly woman he knew. Unfortunately, she died last year. Since then, he has been sleeping in a state institution on Suzdalskaya Street, in a basement, and on the street. He has social registration and will be eligible for a pension in approximately one and a half years. As of today, he is our ward.
