“I grew up in a house very much like this—a central hall with a pair of rooms flanking either side,” says Johnson, who was raised a few blocks away and was moving back to her hometown from New York City, now with her husband, James, and son, Henry, in tow. Like most locals she was familiar with this National Register property: Its prime location and hovering-over-the-sidewalk presence make it unique among Charleston’s beautiful old homes.

“For the entrance hall we chose a scenic wallpaper because you feel like you’re walking into a fantasy,” says Kaihoi, noting the rooms beyond follow this conceit: Densely patterned chinoiserie papers set the dining room and primary bedroom alight in woodland Arcadia, the latter amid custom faux-bois millwork that settles a silk-tasseled canopy bed into a corner library.

Redd and Kaihoi began their decoration in the entrance hall and the family room. “The family room is where everyone is most of the time, so we started there, drawing inspiration from Brooke Astor’s famed red lacquered library,” Redd says of cloaking the walls instead in grass cloth with navy grosgrain ribbon running in bands to mirror the architecture of Astor’s red-and-brass room.

With the interior design powerhouse of Miles Redd and David Kaihoi, the process evolved over five-plus years; the Vogels moved in “probably a little earlier than we should have and lived in a house that was primed white with almost no light fixtures until Miles and David could get busy,” recalls Alex.

The Vogels would need to turn it back into a family house. Fortunately the Mellons kept all the original blueprints from construction as well as the 1960 blueprints from when it became their private museum. And, notes Alex, even as an art library, much of the Delano & Aldrich details remained intact.

The Vogels were living on a smaller farm about three miles away when they learned through their real estate agent, Peter Pejacsevich, that Brick House, as their place is known, was available. They acted swiftly. Their parcel includes a lake and a tennis court, as well as a poolhouse designed by architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen.

In fact, when the property was offered for sale in its entirety in 2014 for $70 million following Mrs. Mellon’s death at the age of 103, no single buyer presented itself. Her estate managers decided instead to sell the property in more manageable parcels.
