A Medical First: Treated Before Birth
Doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia have achieved the impossible - treating Pompe disease while the baby was still in the womb.
In the second trimester, the fetus received enzyme replacement therapy, stopping the disease before it could cause deadly muscle and heart damage. The baby was born healthy - the first-ever case of a genetic disorder treated in utero.
This breakthrough could transform prenatal care, opening the door to prevent countless inherited diseases before they even begin.

More than 13 million people worldwide have been born through IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies (ART), according to new global estimates. Since the first «test tube» baby was born in 1978, IVF has grown into the most common ART method, with a baby conceived this way now arriving every 35 seconds.
An international research team analyzed health data from 101 countries to estimate the total number of ART births.
Between 1978 and 2018, they found that 10 to 13 million babies were born via these methods. Preliminary figures from 2018 to 2023 add another 3 to 4 million births.
Data came from the International Committee Monitoring Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ICMART), but not all countries maintain complete registries. To fill the gaps, researchers estimated ART use based on the number of clinics in each country and adjusted for miscarriage rates.
Their analysis shows an exponential rise in births from ART since around 2000.
Europe leads with 3.6 to 4.5 million IVF births, followed by Asia with 3 to 4 million, and North America with 1.4 to 1.6 million. Advances in technology over the past 20 years have made IVF safer, more affordable, and more successful. In the UK, for example, the average IVF pregnancy rate with frozen embryos has risen from 7% in the 1990s to 36% in 2021.
Modern practice now favors transferring a single embryo rather than several, sharply reducing multiple births. Today, over 93% of IVF cycles use a single embryo transfer, with multiple birth rates falling below 3%.
Researchers hope these improvements will lead to more equitable access to safe, high-quality IVF care worldwide.
They stress that while the estimates are not exact, they represent the most robust global picture of ART births to date.

For the first time in U.S. history, women over 40 are having more babies than teenagers.
Teen birth rates have plummeted by 73% since 1990, while birth rates for women aged 40+ have surged by 193%. In 2023, women over 40 accounted for 4.1% of all U.S. births - just surpassing the 4.0% attributed to teens.
The shift reflects everything from improved fertility options and delayed life milestones to a redefinition of what motherhood “should” look like.
