You’ve probably seen those cryptic codes: 3AA, 5BB, 4BC.
The number (3/4/5) = the stage of development (how expanded the blastocyst is).
The first letter (A–C) = quality of the inner cell mass (that’s the part that becomes the baby).
The second letter (A–C) = quality of the trophectoderm (cells that form the placenta).
Example:
3AA = very nice embryo, early stage.
5BB = later stage, good quality, also a solid contender.
4BC = not as “pretty,” but still can make a healthy baby.
It’s not a beauty contest. Even embryos with “lower grades” can lead to healthy pregnancies.
