The very first, pilot, international competition dates back to 1904; Basketball has been featured in the Summer Olympics since 1936. Then, in Berlin, the US team became the champion, which defeated Canada in the final. Since then, the American team has traditionally dominated the Olympic basketball competition until 1972, when in Munich, during the final match, it suffered its first defeat from the USSR team. As for the world championships under the auspices of FIBA, the first such competition took place in Argentina in 1950, and three years later, the first world championship among women's teams was also held in Chile. Women's basketball entered the Olympic program ten Olympics later than men's - in 1976, in Montreal (Canada).
