Mounting evidence from many studies suggests loneliness and social isolation are very detrimental to health. In one study, those with the strongest social relationships were most likely to live longer than those with poor social connections. There are lots of ways to develop and strengthen social ties. Pick up the phone and call friends regularly. Make plans to get together in person. Volunteer for a cause you believe in. Join a class or join a group related to an interest or hobby you have. Keep up with old friends and make new ones to strengthen and expand your social circle.

Results of studies show that pet owners have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels compared to those who do not own pets. Pet owners had lower total cholesterol and triglycerides compared to non-pet owners. This may translate to better overall heart health and reduced risk of heart disease. Dog owners may enjoy improved heart health in part because they are more likely to engage in physical activity because they walk their dogs regularly. Pet ownership in childhood is linked to decreased susceptibility to allergies.

Chronic stress depresses the immune system and increases the risk of several types of illnesses. It raises the level of hormones called catecholamines. Being stressed out leads to increased levels of suppressor T cells, which suppress the immune system. When this branch of the immune system is impaired, you are more susceptible to viral illnesses including respiratory conditions like colds, flu, and the novel coronavirus infection. Stress leads to the release of histamine, a molecule involved in allergies. Combat stress with strategies like deep breathing, meditation, exercise, and relaxation.

Antioxidant compounds in ginger root have potent anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. Normal metabolic processes in the body, infections, and toxins all contribute to the production of free radicals resulting in oxidative stress. Antioxidants in foods like ginger quench free radicals and help guard against arthritis, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and may other conditions. Grate some fresh ginger and steep it in hot water to make tea. Fresh grated ginger also makes a great addition to healthy stir fried veggies. Ginger has proven antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Oatmeal is a classic choice to help lower cholesterol, thanks to its soluble fiber. But a packet of instant raisin and spice oatmeal can be loaded with 15 grams (three teaspoons!) of sugar. Make oatmeal with real oats instead. Add a sprinkle of raisins and a dash of cinnamon for only about 9 grams of sugar. It takes longer but it can make a big difference for your weight and your heart.

Does ice cream top your list of comfort foods? Cool off instead with ½ cup of juicy, frozen blueberries topped with a creamy dollop of nonfat yogurt. This sweet dessert has almost no saturated fat, compared with 14 grams in some premium ice creams studded with rich extras. You slash the calories and sugar, too -- a bonus if you're watching your weight.

Shop smart at the grocery store. Low-fat turkey sausage instead of pork or beef sausage will do your heart good. Simmer it with fiber-rich beans and veggies. At breakfast, three links of lean turkey sausage adds up to just 1.5 grams of saturated fat. A similar pork sausage has three times as much unhealthy saturated fat.

Orange juice and breakfast just seem to go together. But if you want a citrus kick, you're better off getting it from an actual orange. A cup of orange juice fills your glass with about 21 grams of sugar and almost no fiber. A large orange has a little less sugar -- about 17 grams -- but more than six times the heart-healthy fiber.

Cream cheese can still grace your morning whole-wheat bagel. Reach for the whipped type in the dairy case. You can save about half the calories and saturated fat. Compare: One popular brand has 100 calories in two tablespoons. The saturated fat hits 6 grams -- that's a third of your daily limit before lunchtime! The whipped version has half the saturated fat and 60 calories.
