Remembering Bro Elio Croce

Today, we came together at St. Daniel Comboni Chapel to remember Bro Elio Croce, five years after he passed away from COVID-19. This chapel was built by Bro Elio before he died, and it was filled with love and memories.

Family, friends, and many people whose lives he touched joined us, his sister Maria, the Corti Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Home, Lacor Hospital, and others who knew and loved him.
Archbishop Emeritus Dr. John Baptist Odama reminded us of what he said at Bro Elio’s funeral in 2020:
“Bro Elio’s life and death were a true example of charity. To us in the Archdiocese of Gulu, he is a hero. His love for the poor, the sick, and the vulnerable will always inspire us. He deserves to be remembered as a Martyr of charity in our time.”

Bro Elio helped the sick, cared for orphans, taught young people skills like building, and stood by communities during hard times, even during war. He once said:
“I will die, but my work will never die.”

We still see his love in the smiles of children and in the work he left behind.
Continue resting in peace, Bro Elio Croce.

Today, we were pleased to welcome a team from the Ministry of Health to our hospital. Their visit is part of support supervision taking place in all major health facilities across the Acholi sub-region this week.

Support supervision provides an extra layer of oversight, helps facilities run smoothly, guides staff, and ensures that services meet national standards.

We thank the Ministry of Health for their visit, guidance, and continued support in helping us provide the best care for our community.

Last month, the National Drug Authority (NDA) ordered an immediate recall of all batches of the anesthesia drug Bupivacaine from the Ugandan market after receiving numerous reports of serious and potentially fatal side effects.
As part of their response, the NDA has been visiting hospitals across the country to ensure the recall is being properly implemented and to hear directly from healthcare workers about their experiences. Today, we were pleased to welcome the NDA team to our hospital. They engaged with staff in the
theater, pharmacy, and pediatrics units. They took the time to listen, learn, and understand the impact firsthand.
Thank you, NDA, for not just conducting the inspections, but for also showing genuine care for the safety of our patients and the well-being of our community.

At just five years old, Ruth faced a terrifying diagnosis. Her belly swelled, her voice faded, and doctors sent her home for palliative care. But Ruth and her family refused to give up. When her condition worsened, they returned to Lacor hospital , where a team of doctors made a bold decision: to operate. The surgery lasted eight hours. Ruth suffered two cardiac arrests. But she survived. And she healed. Today, she’s running, laughing, and living.
Ruth’s story is more than a miracle, it’s a call to action. In low-income countries, only 20% of children with cancer survive. Her full story on this link:

Yesterday, 30th October,2025, marked one year since we lost our dear Executive Director, Dr. Cyprian Opira. To honor his memory, we gathered with his family for a memorial prayer at the hospital chapel. It was a moment to reflect on the kind of person he was, humble, caring, and deeply committed to serving others. Everyone at the end of the mass left filled with a sense of what it means to live with
purpose and compassion. Though Dr. Cyprian is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the way we care for our patients, support one another, and serve with love, just as he did, even in his final days.
Rest peacefully, Dr. Cyprian. You are missed, but never forgotten.
