Hand hygiene is the most effective way of reducing spread of hospital acquired infections in the health care setting. when you do hand hygiene, u physically remove the dirt and visible debris and chemically kill the germs (cleaning and disinfection of hands)
I will say it barbarically that " our hands are so much in love with the face" that's why always one will find himself touch his face always. and that our face has three major ports of entry of infectious agents ie; eyes, mouth and the nose.if you dont perform hand hygiene whenever u have an opportunity, there are high chances that you will introduce germs into your eyes, nose and sometimes mouth. hand hygiene can be done using soap and water, alcohol based hand rub( hand sanitizer ) and weak chlorine solution (0.05%) Always wash hands before contact with a patient, clean and sterile procedures, putting on gloves. and wash your hands after patient contact, exposure to body fluids, cleaning, and after contact with patient surroundings like linen, and after u take off gloves (opportunities to wash hands and should always be utilized). there are other obvious times to wash hands which every one knows though not all do it ie wash hands before eating and after using the latrine. Take your time and wash hands properly putting in mind the steps and please know that hand hygiene takes only 40 -60 seconds which is enough time to cover even the frequently missed parts like the tips of the fingers and the thumb. remember not to use the hand rub when your hands are visibly soiled, it will not be effective. also whenever your gloves are visibly soiled, its advisable to perform hand hygiene on gloved hands before you doff them.
