Ascites in Broilers or "water belly" or pulmonary hypertension syndrome, is a metabolic disorder characterized by fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity, swollen liver, and right-sided heart failure.

It is caused by rapid growth, high metabolic oxygen demand, and poor ventilation, often resulting in sudden death or severe breathing distress.

Key Aspects of Ascites at 4 Weeks:

Symptoms: Affected birds typically show breathing difficulties (dyspnea), a distended (swollen) abdomen filled with fluid, cyanosis (bluish skin/comb), and slow growth.

Causes: The fast growth rate of modern broilers causes oxygen demand to exceed the cardiopulmonary capacity.

This is exacerbated by low ambient temperatures (cold stress), high altitudes (low oxygen), poor ventilation, and fast-growth diets.

Post-Mortem Findings: Key indicators include yellow fluid and fibrin clots in the abdominal cavity, a swollen or shrunken liver with a tough capsule, and a flabby or dilated heart.

Management & Prevention:
Ventilation: Ensure adequate airflow to remove ammonia and provide oxygen, especially in cold, sealed sheds.

Feeding Management: Use feeding programs that limit excessive early growth, such as controlling high-energy diets or reducing feed intake for 1-2 hours daily. (Allow some 1 or 2 hours of no feed between feeding times)

Lighting: Implement appropriate light programs (e.g., 1-2 hours of dark daily from 8 days of age) to reduce metabolic activity especially late in the night.

Environmental Control: Avoid cold stress which increases the oxygen demand by adding heat sources (Eg Charcoal stoves especially in this cold season)
