1: TOOTH DISCOLORATION
Your teeth may become stained on the surface or within the tooth. These stains may be extrinsic or intrinsic.
Extrinsic stains occur on the enamel(outer tooth surface) due to smoking, consuming foods like coffee, wine and cola.
Intrinsic stains occur when dentin(inner structure) darkens or turns yellow. This can be due to excessive exposure to fluoride, maternal use of tetracycline antibiotics during the second half of pregnancy and in children below 8years. However, dentine may become yellow over time as a person grows, this is due to wearing of enamel covering the dentine.
Discoloration is prevented by practicing a regular dental health routine including; regular brushing especially after meals, rinse your mouth after taking stains related foods like coffee, wine and cola, avoid smoking or brush thoroughly well immediately after, regular cleaning of teeth by a dentist or dental hygienist, avoid high fluoride water, and regularly visit your dentist.
Discoloration is treated by ;applying a bleaching agent on enamel to whiten teeth, whitening toothpastes may remove minor stains, if stains persist , then bonding compounds like composite may be used to cover the stains or veneers may be used.
