Today we join the world in celebrating the world Autism Awareness day. Globally, 1 in every 100 children has been diagnosed with Autism which is similar to the statistics for Uganda.

This prevalence has changed greatly over the last few years meaning that this condition is on the increase at a very fast rate.
This creates a great need for more Awareness, schools that can take in these children, trained doctors, teachers and carers and a support system for families who have children with condition.

As Mukisa Foundation ,we call upon the ministry of health, Education, Gender and all partners with government to quickly build an ecosystem that allows for early diagnosis, clear referral pathways ,support for children with disabilities and their families. For every child matters!!!

We had a great time at the ADC / Special Children's Forum meeting this week. Members showed up in large numbers and shared freely. Some of the takeaways are:

1. There is a bigger number of people/ organisations working on issues concerning Children with disabilities in Uganda and therefore a great need for coordination and collaboration to avoid duplication and wastage of resources.
2. We should jointly work on an advocacy strategy to improve taxation, curriculum and assessment, and availability of essential drugs to support children with disabilities.
3. Therapists are a very limited / expensive resource and therefore a great need to equip parents with knowledge and skills to enable them support their children at home. While may organisations are already doing this, it is important to have a training tool that all organisations can refer to to ensure that parents get the best out of these trainings.
4. There is a great need for quality assurance and a monitoring mechanism that could help organisations assess the quality of services provided especially in Therapy and rehabilitation.
5. Local production of assistive devices can help fill the gap of limited access to these devices. One ADC member Kyaninga Child Development Centre is producing a bamboo wheel chair out of locally available materials. This knowledge can be used to produce other devices if we work together.

This was great meeting signaling alot of potential for stronger collaboration and networks for Uganda and beyond.

We are excited to see the next steps, and the future is looking brighter already ✨️

Every day we ensure that our children receive nutritious meals from breakfast to the last meal of the day.

However, good nutrition alone is sometimes not enough if the body is unable to properly absorb these nutrients.

Regular deworming plays an important role in protecting children’s health and ensuring their bodies can fully benefit from the food they eat, especially for those who may be at risk of worm infections.

Have you dewormed your child recently, especially children with disabilities?
Take action today and keep their health protected.

How intentional are we about teaching children the importance of agency and the right to speak up in our schools especially at a time when cases of abuse continue to rise?

At our Bussi Centre, we are choosing to take action. During our Safeguarding Workshop for our vocational learners, we created a safe space for open discussion, reflection, and learning. We emphasized the importance of having the confidence to speak up, reporting safely, and understanding the proper channels for raising concerns.

We also highlighted children’s rights, the right to safety, dignity, protection, and to be heard.

We reminded our learners that speaking up in case of any form of disrespect is not about causing trouble, it is about promoting justice, protecting one another, and ensuring safety for all.

By empowering them with knowledge and clear reporting pathways, we are building a community where everyone feels respected and protected.

Let us all take responsibility as educators, parents, and community members, to nurture children’s agency, encourage open dialogue, and create environments where every child feels safe, confident, and supported to speak up.

Our 2025 Annual Report has been released.

2025 was a year of tremendous progress, marked by both achievements and challenges. While the year presented its share of difficulties, these moments created space for reflection, innovation, and growth.

As an organisation, we paused to reassess our approaches, strengthened our systems, and emerged more resilient, focused, and intentional in the delivery of our services.

We had the honor of receiving the dean of students and the Guild office from Clarke International University , who visited to better understand the work we do and the various ways we support children with disabilities.

The guild office had the opportunity to learn more about our efforts within the disability space, exchange ideas, and explore meaningful areas of collaboration.

We believe this engagement will open more doors for impactful partnerships and continued cooperation with the University.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Clarke International University and its Management for taking the time to visit and engage with us.
