Track Your Baby's Developmental Milestones!

As a parent, it's essential to monitor your baby's growth and development. Here are 5 significant milestones to look out for:

- Baby's First Tooth: Between 6-12 months, your baby's lower front teeth will start to appear. By age 3, they'll have a full set of baby teeth!

- Crawling: Between 6-10 months, your baby will start to crawl. Remember, every baby develops at their own pace!

- Walking: Between 9-12 months, your baby will take their first steps. Some might start earlier or later, but that's completely normal!

- Sitting Up: Between 4-6 months, your baby will start trying to sit up. By 5-9 months, they'll be able to sit up on their own briefly!

- First Words: Between 12-18 months, your baby will start using single words. By age 2, they'll say two-word phrases, and by age 3, they'll have a vocabulary explosion!

Keep in mind that every baby develops at their own pace, and some might need a little more time to reach these milestones. If you have concerns, always consult with your paediatrician.

What you didn't know about HIGH BLOOD SUGAR! Three things will shock you. It can be reversed. High blood sugar and even diabetes can be reversed. This can be done through calorie restriction, intermittent fasting, exercise, and sometimes medications given by a clinician.

It affects pregnancy negatively. Unintended pregnancy with poor glycemic control at the time of conception increases the chance of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including stillbirth, congenital abnormalities, and perinatal mortality.

Skinny people can get diabetes. Lipodystrophy syndromes are conditions that cause abnormal fat loss. So, carrying too much or insufficient fat tissue in your body can be associated with insulin resistance. There are other risk factors for diabetes, including genetics, fat distribution, high cholesterol, sedentary lifestyle, poor eating habits, and more. Therefore, you could be slim but have high blood sugar.

Eat fruits, discard juice. Fruit sugar concentrated in juice is bad for diabetics. In one study, day-long plasma triglycerides in healthy men were 32% greater while they consumed a high-fructose diet than while they consumed a high-glucose diet. High fructose intake has been associated with an increased risk of gout in men and an increased risk of kidney stones.

Your waistline can indicate insulin resistance. A waistline over 40 inches in men and over 35 inches in women could indicate insulin resistance, or if you have a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.8 or higher.

Poverty increases diabetes type 2 incidence. A study done in 2016 found that diabetes is higher in rural areas. Today, it is known that out of 400 million people with diabetes worldwide, over 300 million live in developing countries. This could be because the poor eat highly refined, processed foods that are affordable.

Dealing with high blood pressure during pregnancy? Know the risks!

High blood pressure can lead to:

Reduced blood flow to the placenta, causing slow growth, low birth weight, or premature birth
- Placental abruption, which can cause heavy bleeding and threaten lives
- Intrauterine growth restriction, slowing or decreasing fetal growth
- Organ damage, including brain, eyes, heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and more
- Premature delivery and increased risk of future cardiovascular disease

Stay safe, mama! Regular blood pressure checks during pregnancy can help identify and manage hypertension, reducing the risk of complications.

Yes - Wearing sunscreen may seem like a foreign concern, especially for us in Uganda and Africa at large, because of our lovely dark skin. However, it has its benefits for those who need it. Find out more in this slide.

No - Generally, you don’t need sunscreen unless you have some skin issue for which you need UV protection from sunlight. People with darker skin are less likely to experience sunburn.

Many experts believe that there is no clear link between sun exposure and skin cancer among people with dark skin.

Paracetamol - a common pain reliever, but are you using it safely? 🤕

5 Essential Things to Know Before Taking Paracetamol

1️⃣ Age Restriction: Never give paracetamol to children under 3 months old. Their liver enzymes are still developing, and the medication can cause liver damage and toxicity.

2️⃣ Dosage Limit: Adults, do not exceed 4g of paracetamol in one go. Taking more than the recommended dose can lead to severe liver damage.

3️⃣ Hidden in Other Medications: Paracetamol is often combined with other medications, such as flu syrups like Toffplus and Piritex. Always check the labeling to avoid accidental overdose.

4️⃣ Long-term Use Risks: Taking paracetamol for extended periods (more than 15 days) can lead to rebound headaches. Be cautious and consult your doctor if you experience this.

5️⃣ Different Brand Names: Paracetamol goes by various names, including Panadol and Acetaminophen. Always check the labels to ensure you're not taking multiple products containing paracetamol.

Stay safe, and stay informed! Share with a friend or family member who might need to know this!

Most of us love milk, but sometimes, it causes bloating, gas, diarrhoea, stomach pain, or cramps, If you experience this, you may be lactose intolerant. Today we break down .

What Causes Lactose Intolerance?
If you often have bloating, gas, diarrhoea, stomach pain, or cramps after drinking milk or eating foods that contain dairy products, you may be lactose intolerant. It is common in adults. Between 30 million to 50 million adults have it.

What Is Lactose Intolerance?
Lactose intolerance means that your body can’t digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products. This happens when your small intestine doesn’t make enough lactase, the enzyme that breaks down lactose.

What are the types of Lactose Intolerance?
Primary lactose intolerance is the most common form. Our bodies typically stop making lactase by about age 5 (as early as age 2 for African Americans).
Secondary lactose intolerance happens because of an injury, or illness to small intestine and cause you to make less lactase.
Developmental lactose intolerance happens in babies who are born prematurely.
Congenital lactose intolerance is very rare and is a genetic disorder and both parents have to pass the gene on to their child.

Lactose Intolerance or Dairy Allergy?
Lactose intolerance is not the same as a dairy allergy. The two are often confused. If you have dairy allergy, you’re allergic to certain proteins in milk and dairy products. Dairy allergy reactions can be life-threatening.

Can It Be Prevented?
It can’t be prevented and there isn’t a cure for it. But it’s easily treated. Limit the amount of food and drink you have that contains lactose. You can also take lactase enzyme supplements to help your body digest lactose.

Early Pregnancy Symptoms: What to Look Out For Before a Missed Period

If you've had unprotected s*x and are wondering if you're pregnant, it's essential to know that a negative test result doesn't necessarily mean you're not pregnant. Waiting until after a missed period is the most reliable way to confirm pregnancy. However, there are early signs that may indicate pregnancy. These include:

- Missed period: A delayed or absent menstrual cycle, especially in women with regular periods.
- Breast tenderness: Hormonal changes can cause breast sensitivity and soreness, which may subside as the body adapts.
- Nausea and vomiting: Morning sickness can occur at any time, typically starting one to two months after conception.
- Increased urination: The body's increased blood volume leads to more fluid processing and frequent urination.
- Fatigue: Progesterone levels may contribute to excessive sleepiness during the first trimester.

Keep in mind that these symptoms can be misleading or absent in some cases. If you suspect pregnancy, consult a healthcare provider for accurate testing and guidance.
