Did you know?
Worker bees aged 12 to 18 days are natureโ€™s wax makers. They secrete clear wax flakes from special glands on their abdomen, then chew and shape it into the honeycomb we all know and love.

But over time, combs darken as they are used for brood rearing, filled with cocoons, pollen and propolis. That old, dark comb does not just look rough. It can store pesticides and diseases, and its thickened walls are not ideal for raising healthy bees.

Tip from Malaika Honey:
To keep your hive thriving, remove old combs every 2 to 3 years. Fresh wax means a cleaner, safer space for your bees to grow and store honey.

I can only image how it must be to flee your home escaping war and have to start again in a foreign land. I am compelled by the effort of the refugees. They are learning new skills and the apiaries we established are flourishing.

Uganda is the largest refugee-hosting country in Africa. With over 1.7 million refugees and asylum seekers.

We are working in Rhino Camp Refugee settlement which was established in 1980 during the South Sudanese civil war to accommodate the influx of refugees into Northern Uganda. It now hosts over 200,000.

I am also really grateful to our West Nile team who hold our values dear to bring skills and provide markets to farming refugees.

With strength, we will succeed. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ›–๐ŸŒโœจ

I had a great time meeting up with Mike from All About Beekeeping in his apiary in Diamond Creek to demonstrate the use of our bee venom machine back in Australia. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ๐Ÿ

It was good to see the Australian bees respond just as well as their African counterparts. We successfully harvested a good amount of bee venom.

I've always brought equipment and ideas back to Uganda from Australia so this was a nice change bringing our innovation to Australia. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿฆ˜

Witness the Birth of Royalty! ~ Check out this mesmerizing moment we captured on Malaika Honey Farm, where a queen bee emerges from her cell. ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿโœจ

๐ŸŒผ Queen bees are larger than worker bees and live much longer - up to 5 years compared to the few weeks of a worker bee!
๐ŸŒธ A queenโ€™s diet consists entirely of royal jelly, a protein-rich secretion that helps her develop into the colony's only fertile female.
๐Ÿ Once born, the new queen will embark on a mating flight, meeting drones high in the air to secure the genetic future of the hive.

Bees are incredible creatures, and moments like this remind us of their delicate yet powerful role in nature. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ“ Visit Malaika Honey Farm to experience these wonders up close and learn how weโ€™re breeding queens to support apiculture in Uganda!
