Why Who You Marry Is a Career Decision

When we talk about career choices, we often think of universities, promotions, or new jobs — but rarely do we think of marriage as one. Yet who you marry can shape your dreams more than any employer ever could.

Ronald and I have lived this truth. We’re both professionals. I’m a lawyer and he’s a social worker and we both work in the development sector. In our first year of marriage, I received a scholarship for a Master of Laws abroad. After many heartfelt conversations, we decided I should go. It wasn’t easy, but that moment became one of our greatest lessons in love, trust, and purpose alignment.

Nineteen years later, we’re still learning, adjusting, and cheering each other on, and helping others do the same through The Couple Binders.

If you’re not yet married, please have the deep conversations early about purpose, career, dreams, and how you’ll support each other. It will save you a lot of heartache later.

Some people impact your life so deeply — even without ever meeting them. ❤️

For us, Sr. Dr. Miriam Duggan — founder of Youth Alive Uganda and strong supporter of Emmaus Centre Katikkamu — is one of those people. Through her vision, countless young people learned values that shaped their futures, their faith, and even their families.

We are two of those lives.
Both of us passed through Youth Alive and Emmaus at different times, and the lessons we learned there later became the foundation of our marriage and the work we do today through The Couple Binders -helping couples grow, heal, and thrive in faith, love, and purpose.

We’ve written a heartfelt reflection to honour her legacy — a life that continues to inspire us and many others.
