Spice of Life

Spice of Life Spice Of Life cooperates with Lions Aid Norway to support the GOU to improve Health & Livelihoods Two approaches are used.

Spice of Life (SoL) in cooperation with Lions Aid Norway (LAN) supports both the Government and other partners in a meaningful, respectful and participatory way to improve the health (eye care and diabetes) of the population of Uganda using a multi-sectoral approach. Further intervention is in related sectors as water and sanitation and education. This is because about 30% of the population of Uganda lacks access to safe and clean water. This exposes them to water-borne diseases with dire consequences including lost productive and mortality. In the area of education, and working through local partners, focus is on orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) who would otherwise not have opportunity to access quality education which is the key that can open their possibilities and the future. Sponsoring children in existing schools and / or building and furnishing schools in hard to reach areas.

Hanne and Svein Berntsen have donated a borehole to Bugono Parents Primary school. The borehole will not only help the school community to access water for the consumption, hygiene and sanitation but it is scheduled to be upgraded to a production well for a solar powered irrigation system for the proposed agriculture project to be sponsored by the Lions Club of Askøy. This will help boost the nutrition at the school and host community and improve livelihoods

When I keep 1 m distance and use other measures, it's because:
🌸 I'm smart enough to know that both you and I can be asymptomatic, but could still spread the virus.
🌸 No, I don't live in fear of the covid 19 virus; I just want to be part of the solution, not the problem!
🌸 I don't feel like the government is controlling me; I feel like an adult can contribute to infection stops.
🌸 The world is not about me. It's all about us
🌸 Sticking to the measures doesn't make me weak, nervous, dumb or controlled. This makes me aware of the spread of infection.
🌸 Sticking to the measures is not political. It's a choice about public health and common sense!

HUMANITARIAN SUPPORT

Torrential rains were experienced across Uganda, mid-October to the end of 2019.

At least 38 people were reported dead due to floods and landslides in Bundibugyo, Bududa and Sironko districts, and over 150 people were said to have been injured. Up to 300,000 were affected and an estimated 65,000 people displaced, according to Government sources.

The floods and landslides left a trail of destruction, including damaged homes, infrastructure, agriculture and livelihoods.

In response, Spice of Life, made an assessment and approached Lions Aid Norway for assistance. Fortunately, through the MD 104 Catastrophe Fund, Nok 200,000 was granted.

The support which included Blankets, Taurplines, Jerricans, Washing Soap, Basins and Food items was earmarked for Bududa District, situated in the steep foothills of Mount Elgon, close to Uganda’s border with Kenya. And specifically for Bushika parish where a massive landslide struck several villages on the afternoon of December 3, 2019.

The Items were delivered to the District leadership (Chief Administrative Officer, Resident District Commissioner and auditors) in Bududa who verified them and re-issued them to Spice of Life and the Local Lions Clubs for direct distribution to the beneficiaries.

We are grateful to LAN, to the District leadership in Bududa, to the Lions of Soroti and Mbale, to the Leos from Kampala and to the local volunteers including Uganda Red Cross youths, LCs and teachers for the success of the exercise.

Below are some of the photos depicting the effects of the catastrophe and the relief from LAN

The Aid was coordinated by Spice of Life and was delivered to the beneficiaries on January 14, 2020.

More than 500 families benefitted from items such as Blankets, Taurplines, Soap, Jerricans, basins and food items.

A sizeable amount was left behind under the care of Lions Club of Mbale Central to be issued out at a later date to affected persons in a nearby Parish.

We are grateful to the Volunteers who included Red cross youths, Leos, Lions from nearby clubs, teachers and local leaders. These made the distribution work a lot easy and more efficient.

We are ever so grateful for the support

Our Story

Spice of Life (SoL) was established in the year 2013 to support both the Government and other partners in a meaningful, respectful and participatory way to improve the eye health of the population of Uganda using a multi-sectoral approach. This is in keeping with the major challenges facing the eye care programme in Uganda, including the high prevalence of blindness (estimated to be 1%). Emphasis will be placed on disease control (cataract and trachoma) and human resource development for eye health. Further intervention is in related sectors as water and sanitation and education. This is because about 35% of the population of Uganda lacks access to safe and clean water. This exposes them to water-borne diseases with dire consequences including lost productive and mortality. In the area of education, focus is on orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) who would otherwise not have opportunity to access quality education which is the key that can open their possibilities and the future. Two approaches are used. Sponsoring children in exisitng schools and / or building and furnishing schools in hard to reach areas.
