Did you know that equipment used in lethal injections, like IV pumps and drugs, aren't regulated by the FDA?

Under current law, these items are exempt from typical medical standards since their purpose is to end life, not preserve it. Ethical guidelines, like those from the American Medical Association, strictly prohibit physicians from participating in ex*****ons. This includes tasks such as administering or overseeing the drugs used. It’s a complex issue where medical equipment, originally designed to save lives, is repurposed for capital punishment.

As a Medical engineer, I find it crucial to reflect on the role of medical devices in processes outside their intended use, such as the ex*****on of Marcellus Williams on September 24, 2024. Lethal injection protocols involve machines originally designed to save lives—IV infusion pumps, catheters, and drug dispensing systems—all of which must meet stringent medical device standards (FDA and ISO). Yet, their use in ex*****ons raises significant ethical concerns. Should life-saving devices be used to end lives? As professionals, we must engage in this dialogue to ensure that biomedical advancements serve humanity responsibly.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR)

Is a growing threat that makes infections harder to treat, leading to longer hospital stays and higher risks. Imagine a world where routine infections could be life-threatening—that's the risk we're facing.

Global efforts are underway to tackle this, including the use of antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) devices. These devices test how bacteria respond to different antibiotics, helping doctors choose the most effective treatment right away. For example, systems like VITEK 2 quickly identify the right antibiotic, slowing the spread of resistance.

These technologies are crucial in preserving the effectiveness of current treatments and protecting our health.
