In Uganda

Plan to reduce maternal and infant mortality launched

· Under this plan, interventions will prioritize areas with the highest maternal and child mortality.

· It is expected that an additional 120, 000 children and 6,100 women will be saved by 2017 under the plan.

· Improving maternal health and reducing child mortality are all aspirations enshrined in the Millennium Development Goals.

• Several young people who turned up for Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) recruitment exercise in Kampala were disqualified on medical grounds.
• According to the army deputy spokesperson, of the 600 youth who were tested, 75 had Hepatitis B or HIV.
• A study conducted to determine the baseline prevalence of Hepatitis B in the country in 2009 revealed that 40% of the infections occur between 15 and 19 years of age.
