KOICA Club of Uganda KOCU members are former trainees from KOICA's annual Capacity Improvement and Advancement for Tommorow programme. What We Aim For

To engage KOICA fellows through regular communications and thereby strengthen their bond to the club

2. To eunsure maximum participation of fellows in community outreach activities organized by the club

3. To Encourage networking among alumni

4. To establish effective club administration and governance

As we come to the close of the year 2024, we are so grateful for one of our greatest achievement of partnering with Korea Foundation for International Health Care (KOFIH).

The General Assembly was the first Korea Uganda gathering for the Alumni with the theme; "Sharing Korea's experience, sharing friendship."

The gathering was a collective commitment to global progress and collaboration and the purpose of the gathering was fourfold:

1. To increase the Visibility of Korea and Korea Officisl Development Assistance (ODA) with its impact on international development.

2. To promote Dr. Let Jong-wool fellowship program and the Capacity Improvement & advancement for Tomorrow Fellowship Program to empower individuals to become catalysts for change through education and leadership.

3. To utilize the networking of Alumni by offering a wealth of experience and expertise and also strengthen ties between KOFIH and KOICA Alumni by creating opportunities for collaboration and mutual support.

4. Sharing Health and Development Knowledge in alignment with our commitment to global well-being and also share critical health and development knowledge.

For those of you who participated in the knowledge sharing program in Charcoal Briquetes making for environmental restoration organised by KOICA CLUB OF UGANDA at Ndese Village Mukono District as on 7/9/2024 of which Mr. Njuba Erisa Mugabi activitly participated and learnt from the training offered

Let us appreciate him because after his training from the KOREA of Mukono Ndese village. He has shared his knowledge and skills to the people of Kalambi Village Wakiso District. So members less learn to share what we have learnt from south korea for the development of our mother country Uganda. Mr . Njuba thanks alot for your ability to restore the environment by turning wastes/Gabagge into Charcoal thus areduction in the tree cutting

On Saturday 8th September 2024, KOCU members extended their community support program to members of Ndese community in Mukono district, as part of the Club's annual knowledge-sharing activities. In participation were political and community leaders, women’s groups, Ndese SMU group, youths, among other members.

*Venue:* Ndese C/U Primary School.

*Activities* :
1. Sensitization on effects of climate change and environmental restoration.
2. Skilling in production of charcoal briquettes: converting garbage/waste into clean cooking fuel.

*Major highlights:*
1. The activity attracted over 150 participants.
2. The community acquired valuable skills in charcoal briquette production, climate change mitigation and adaptation.
3. Donation of a carbonizer and manual extruders by KOCU.

*Special appreciation to:*
1. KOICA Uganda Office that was represented by the KOICA Project Manager Mr. Oh Jeonho, a Young professional Ms. Goeun and 2 (two) Program officers. KOCU applauds the KOICA's unwavering towards all the Club's KSA’s.
2. The Chairperson LC.1 for Ndese, community leaders and members who participated.
3. KOCU’s General Secretary, Ms. Grace Nalugwa and Mr. Faluk Mwondha for coordinating and spearheading this very effective and impactful activity.

On *Saturday, June 8th, 2024* , KOCU members were thrilled to extend their community support initiatives to *Itojo Boys Primary School* in *Ntungamo District* , as part of the Club's annual knowledge-sharing activities. This event was graced by KOICA Uganda Office, represented by Mr. Arthur Kimbugwe, the Humanitarian and Partnerships Specialist, prominent religious, political, and community leaders, school founders, administrators, teachers, parents, and pupils.

*Key activities included* :
1. Sensitization on the significant benefits of tree planting and protection for health, wildlife and the environment.
2. Planting of various tree species.
3. Donation of scholarstic materials.

*Special appreciation* is extended to:

1. KOICA Uganda Office for the unwavering support towards all KOCU's knowledge-sharing activities.
2. Itojo Boys Primary School's founding members, administration, teachers, and parents for their warm hospitality and dedication to shaping the future of their learners.

*Topics and Facilitators:*
1. Normalizing mental health discussion on depression and su***de by *Mr. Eric Kwebiiha Akiiki* , an Occupational therapist, mental health and addiction expert.
2. Investing for passive income: A case for Government securities in Uganda by *Mr. Mugisha Evaristo.*
3. Enhanced Financial Literacy for better stability and Independence *by Mr. Daniel Ayebare,* Chairperson- Uganda Financial Literacy Association & CEO Aye Africa Foundation.
4. Entrepreneurship for Financial Freedom by *Ms. Anita Muhairwe Malinga* the Executive Director of Shine Leadership International.

*Participants:*
1. University Students
2. KOICA Club of Uganda Executives and Members.

*Special participant:* KOICA Uganda Country Office represented by Ms. Jieun Park, Program Manager, KOICA Uganda Country Office.

*Key Highlights:*
1. The activity attracted over 150 participants from academia and corporate world, including 95 students from IUIU Female Campus, 14 from Kampala University, 36 from IUIU Kampala Campus and 14 members of KOCU.
2. All speakers delivered timely, informative and insightful sessions addressing the current economic climate and current mental health challenges in Uganda. The country has been under the spot light due to its high prevalence of mental health conditions, with 32% percent of the country's total Population affected, according to a 2022 report by a Lancet Psychiatry Correspondence.
3. Student's active participation and interest in discussions on economic and mental health issues demonstrate their readiness to tackle significant development challenges.

The event concluded with the awarding of certificates to all participants by Ms. Jieun Park.

*Activity* : KOCU Knowledge sharing- *Capacity building for *Coffee Farmers on Improved value chain management.*

*Place* : Kufu, Bunanghabo, Manafwa District.

*Coordinators* : Charity Kaitesi, Robert Kasagga and Arthur Kimbugwe.

*Facilitators* : Charity Kaitesi (Team Lead) Mbale team, Faluk Mwondha, Sax Agaba, Norman Mutsetuzi and Mr. Joseph Werishe.

*Key Highlights*
1. The overall attendance by farmers was satisfactory.
2. The event attracted a significant number of women and youths (around 47% of the total attendance registered).
3. Leaders at various levels participated; for instance, a Commissioner in the Ministry of Water and Environment and other significant local leaders.
4. Insightful and informative Knowledge on improved coffee value chain was shared and transfered to local coffee farmers.
5. Fieldwork: Proper farming practices were demonstrated in a coffee plantation.

*Observations* :
1. The overall coordination of the activity was effective and enabled a successful event.
2. Substandard farming methods: Knowledge sharing activity was timely.
3. Farmers require further skills training in the Coffee value chain.
4. More sensitization on gender and development is required having noticed that women in the area remain disadvantaged with limited participation in profitable coffee farming and lack direct ownership of plantations or land.

*Special Appreciation* *to:*
1. KOICA Uganda Office for continuous support to KOCU activities as well the effort aimed at elevating the economic status of Ugandans in local communities through promotion of profitable agricultural practices.
2. Farmers who participated and their mobilizers Mr. Wangwe and Mr. Richard Wafuka, among other and Kufu local Community leaders.
3. Charity Kaitetsi, the activity coordinator who also lead members of KOICA CIAT 2022 Cohort to facilitate the KS activity, together with Mr. Joseph Werishe, an Expert in coffee farming in Kufu village.
