Union of Hope

Union of Hope We are a registered charity in Uganda/Spain who have the passion to create social changes in the lives of marginalized communities in Lira, North Uganda.

What we do

Our charity is non-political and non-religious and our members come from very different backgrounds. We don’t want to and we can’t change life in Uganda , but we hope, with our small and punctual contributions, to be able to improve their lives, especially in Lira city, in the North of the country. Our goal is to make a bit easier and happier the life of some Ugandan families. We elaborate simple and brief projects during a year. Our social worker, finds a family and let us know its need, he makes a budget of the project. From here, in Spain or England, we get in touch with our members, we will inform them about it, and they will decide if they want to take part in the project and how much they want to donate towards it. This is always free of any pressure on them. We are fully aware of the difficult economic situation that Spain and other countries in the EU are living right now and we don ́t want to put any pressure on our members with a monthly or permanent payment. We rather prefer each individual to decide when and how much can they help with. We will inform every month of the projects going on and they will decide how and when they want to collaborate. Once we get the money needed to go ahead we will send the money to Uganda, and Moses , our head of projects in Uganda over there will distribute it. As proof of this, all our members will get photos, videos, personal letters, thank you cards, from the people receiving our help. ( families, shops, schools, etc). One of our main goals is to get total clarity in this process and we want to make sure the helper and the person receiving the help can communicate fluently. We want you to see closely the results and benefits of your help, and we want you to be who decide how, when and why. Types of projects achieved from 2010 to 2013. You can see videos and pictures on the videos/pictures gallery :

1. Helping family life: to build huts, to buy seeds to create crops, objects very much needed in a house, bicycles, helping new self- employed little business, medical attention, to buy animals (cows, hens, goats , etc) others ...

2.Helping education, school for children: to pay school material, uniforms, bicycles to transport kids to school, school fees, colleges fees. Helping the disabled: to buy wheel chairs, special equipped bicycles for disabled people, to help them to create a business.

3.Sewing machines, tool boxes: we work closely with few colleges in Lira town, North of Uganda. To own a sewing machine makes a huge difference for a girl studying to become a dress maker, the same a tool box will do for a boy preparing himself to be a carpenter, that is why at the end of each school year we buy and give 2 or 3 of these machines and we hand them to the students in most difficult economic situation. This is our special present for the hard work they have put into it.

4. To buy bicycles/ help from the charity wheels4life (www.wheels4life.org). Our charity wouldn ́t be the same without the help of an American charity called Wheels4life. They buy and donate bicycles all over the world. They have generously helped us in few occasions . Our charity choose the families (quite often women with AIDS) who really need them. We carry on a follow up on these families to make sure they are using their bikes in the right way. Bikes4life Project distributed 135 bicycles( 42 in year 2011 & 93 in 2012/2013) to poor women, children and elderly people to provide access to transportation to health centres, schools, water source, market, gardening. The grant was donated by wheels4life, USA. Thanks to our supporters/ donors. Something as simple as a push bike , that in Europe we use as part of our relaxing- holiday time, in Uganda can change the life of a family. With a push bike, they can move around, go to get water without damaging their backs, take children to school, poorly women can go to hospitals to get their medication, they can transport goods to be sold on the market...in Uganda a push bike means “life” and makes a huge difference to the person who owns one.

We have always done a small things with passion and it has change lives. We don't need to be a big Charity with billions budget, we just have to know where we are going, a vision without a route chart is dead.. we use our approach of Depth of Impact than Spread of impact and we have achieved alot.

Journey of my life and call in the ministry.....

For the past years of my life and my growth from childhood there was a unique identify in me that communicated alot of challenge ahead of me and these are positive challenges in life..my mum tells me in was born in June and this is a serious month in my community, always a difficult month of famine and dry land. My parents took through a well nurtured Lango culture of love and passion. I was always train to share and give back..food at home was communal and people eat in one pool. At one time i never like it because I miss food yet It was our own food in our home but my mum told me there was always good things ahead. I have led this life and seen it happen every day in my life.. I wish to thank God because it is now being fulfilled. He put me in this situation to train me to serve..I learn to fear God before I can serve him.
When I founded Union of Hope a volunteer organization, my vision was to sponsor one family and stop there but by his Grace we have supported over 2000 children in five year
This year 2018 comes with a new challenge when decided to leave my load Job to figure out how to Develop the organization and make it more visible and viable..one friend told me are you serious? And up to now I have no answer for him.... But I have learn I don't need to be MP, Dr or Ministry or President to change lives, What I need is being CREATIVE within my reach. Friends o does not matter who or what you are to change a live, all you need is to be creative within you small resources. I wish to challenge is all who are my friend that can you think about how you can be creative in this year 2019 and join to changing more lives
Our Vision: Making the Invisible,Visible.
I will count up to ............ till God says we are done.
I never had any thing but today I can count the blessing. There are people who have been with me from day one and I can't mentioned all their names, however all of you have been there for me and in any ways supported me. Thanks you all.

In Novermber we distributed 76 bicycles in Banya parish Inomo sub-country, apac district. Our third distribution in this sub county this year seeing us distribute 220 bicycles to women effected by HIV/AIDS and other vulnerable women and children.

One core value of our projects is to ensure we fully commit to the regions we support. This means we do not move on from an area until we are satisfied that enough people have benefited to make a visible difference. After completing distributions in all 5 parishes of the Aduku and Apac sub-counties we are now working our way through the 6 parishes of the Aduku sub-county and we will not stop until we are done!

Today many women who have previously benefited from our distributions were present to witness the next phase of our program, a testament to our presence and commitment to the region.

In our discussions with community leaders, council members and government representatives we heard stories of how many women lack the capital or means to save for a bicycle, a powerful tool for economic, social and health empowerment. Our beneficiaries report being healthier, more independent, wealthier and happier since receiving their bicycles.

Inomo: Inomo, Banya (40), Ajok, Agwiciri, Abedmot
Aduku: Alira (26), Apire (10), Aboko, Adyeda, Ongoceng – all distributed
Apac subcounty – Abedi, Atik, Akere, Atopi, Atana – all distributed

Making the Invisible, Visible in Communities
Today 4th September, Union of Hope Founders Moses, Carmen & Cameron celebrate six years of voluntarism, hard work and dedication rendered to supporting the local communities of Apac district. Union of Hope has tremendously supported families, children, Girls & boys and women in the education sector, economic empowerment and mobility4health where we have been able to reach out to 4000 people direct beneficiaries for the past six years. Friends, sponsors/donors have worked day and night to raise funds to support different projects across the three sub counties. When we started work in 2011, we thought of helping everyone but just one year on the road we show our approach changing to depth of impact either than spread of impact. For the past year we worked in Apac, Aduku and Inomo sub counties distributing 643 bicycles to women and children who are HIV positive, we have distributed sporting materials to schools and sponsored over 100 children in vocations, primary and secondary education. We also wish to thank our founder member Carmen & Husband Luis who worked very hard to funding the charity activities and as they move on to a new life, we wish them luck.
As founders we have devoted all our resources towards helping those who have been seen invisible in the community visible by empowering them to take lead into coming out with solutions towards their own problems. We believed in facilitating the communities to take lead in their communities’ project. When a poor person becomes a driver towards changing their lives, it becomes very easy for us to work without overhead or high cost of operatio. Our community support groups have work very hard to ensure their voices, needs and priorities are taken into consideration by government and organizations. We are so proud by our women groups who have come up to speak about their HIV status triggering thousands of people in Apac, Aduku and Inomo sub counties to attend VCT in different health facilities and this also has promoted peaceful interaction among them.
We have now seen the Invisible women, children who were marginalized taking lead into becoming Visible across communities in the community where we work.
We wish to thank all our supporters, donors and those who have given up all their resources towards making these people Visible. You still have the chance to make one person visible from their level of vulnerable. Please help us raise money, be part of the fund rising and also joins the team of founder members in promoting our common goals.
As the year come to end, we shall be welcoming our co-founder to Uganda Cameron Ventura and his team from the University of Queensland, Australia and also lets welcome our friends from Vancouver Madison who will be with us for her research.
Bikes4life Australia will also be launching the second phase of our community mobility4health project in our main workshop by December 2017; we wish to thank Ebony Butler the founder Bikes4life and volunteers for working harder in raising funds and collecting bikes for shipping.
We also thank Indo Africa Charity and Janice from Canada for donating school Uniforms to 20 children last Friday and three sewing machines to our community women groups. We are all looking forward into the exciting year 2017/18

Union of Hope, Indo Africa Charity Partnership 2017 updates
It just started with one step, now its thousand steps counting
On 13th August 2017, Indo Africa Charity based in Canada founded by Vassant Lakhani with support from friends around the world together with contribution from team of Volunteers who visited Lira recently for Medical camp. In the beginning when I founded Union of Hope, my life seems to be focusing in one family, one child but in six years I have seen my family extended, am not just talking about one hundred, Union of Hope has been able to contribute to improvement of 4000 people across the Lango sub region, without paid staff, without operation costs, we are purely a grass root movement, purely volunteers who have worked day and night to support this lovely people. This day of this visit, I show a new hope, a new ray in the lives of women groups in Alira Parish, Aduku sub county ( Apac district), when the team of volunteers from U.K and Canada visited to hear their stories and donated food items and scholastic materials to hundreds of children and women who are HIV positive and with sound promising opportunities we had one volunteer donating three sewing machines, children balls and wheelchair for one lovely friend. When you build the process team, you don’t need to build a sustainability strategy. I am so happy to say that with great women, you can make a better place to live. Union of Hope wish to thank all the team from Indo Africa Chairty Canada/U.K, Founder Vasant, senior Rotarian Janice from Canada for taking lead in the supporting Union of Hope to change more lives in the Lango sub region. I am so proud of you all the women groups for taking forth into addressing the problems within your communities and for taking lead in promoting peaceful interactions among people who are HIV positives. This coming Saturday we shall be distributing school Uniforms to 20 children who are orphans and victims of HIV and all these Uniforms will be made locally and produce by our women group members who have recently been trained in tailoring.
As the year ends, we shall be receiving a team of Medical students from the University lead by the Union of Hope Co-founder Cameron who will be doing their internship at Lira Referral and one new friend Alison from Vancouver conducting her Research of Bicycles for Development

A new Ray for Women, children of Aduku Sub county. As we celebrate the Uganda Martyrs' day, Women, children groups in Alira celebrated a new day with new Bicycles. Our Project Mobility4Health distributed 76 bicycles to women who are HIV positive, and children who are orphans & Vulnerable. Under our Theme " Riding out of Poverty" together with Wheels4life, we were able to handover bikes. This is one area which has been affected with the plight of HIV prevalence among families. The bikes will provide modes of transportation to women to access health Centres focusing at reducing money spend on Boda-boda, public vehicle, walking on foot. Our second objectives is to increased performance and attendance/enrollment of Vulnerable children in school. We distributed 15 bicycles to children, 2 to elderly person and 59 to women affected by HIV virus. We believe that for every change in the community, women's involvement is a key, women are the victims of many circumstances and by giving bikes we are increasing access to income, learning platform, productivity and safety of women and their children. We thanks wheels4life for their continues support and all our supporters in helping us meet the needs of those whom we work with. We have now distributed Bicycles to several women groups in Apac sub county, Aduku sub county and Inomo, all in Apac district. Our plan is to provide alternative transport to 5000 people in five years. Be part of these change by helping us fund raise or volunteer with our team members in Australia, United Kingdom or USA by supporting our networks.

We bought in the new year with another successful bicycle distribution, this time in Inomo sub-county, Apac. 76 new bicycles were distributed to women and children effected by HIV, with beneficiaries from two women’s groups. 6 bicycles went to child headed homes, 40 to the Inomo women’s group and another 30 to representatives from the Alira womens group.

Whilst the Alira women’s group has previously benefited from our initiative, it was the first such distribution in Inomo, extending our program across 3 sub-counties!

The bicycles we distribute are key tools for economic, social and health empowerment, with previous beneficiaries using their bicycles to ride to health centres, conduct business at market’s and transport children to and from school more easily, among many other things.

Aside from the handover, the day also served as an introduction for the 2 groups. Despite being from neighbouring sub-county’s, the two groups had not yet connected. Both groups, now good friends, had the opportunity to discuss their successes, as well as the challenges they face and how they can work together to overcome them.

With this last batch, we have now distributed 568 bicycles since 2011 and aim to distribute 5,000 more in the coming 5 years!

Thank you to Wheels4Life for their ongoing support.
