Adongkena Sarah, 24, has a lot to be proud of. After completing mentorship camps run by USAID - US Agency for International Development’s Integrated Community and Nutrition activity, or ICAN; she started a business selling fresh produce at the market; had a healthy baby; and was recently elected deputy chair of the Orya clan, which is the second highest clan leadership role and often reserved for men.

“I thought leadership was only for elderly women and men,” Adongkena said at a meeting held in commemoration of women’s day. “But ICAN has given me skills to be bold and take control of my life. I now realize that a woman can do anything that she aspires to do.”

USAID is working to strengthen the voice and influence of female clan leaders, and to help them to mentor younger women with transformational ideas. As one older woman leader said, “We may not be here tomorrow but younger girls should be able to put on our shoes and carry on... As women, we have many challenges that only we understand and can solve.”
